Why can't I hear all of the drum hits in drum softsynths?
I am having a weird problem that happens with both Jamstix3 and Session Drummer. I will give a Session Drummer example: I find a midi clip that I like within Session Drummer and I preview it. It works fine. I can hear all of the drums. Then I drag it into the Session Drummer midi track. It looks fine. But when I play it, though I can see from the meter that it's working, I only am hearing one drum hit per measure. Weird. But then if I freeze that track, I can hear all of the drums again. Does anyone have any idea what is going on? It doesn't happen all the time but does happen fairly regularly. I am using Sonar 8.5 with the latest updates/patches. Thank you!

not all drum softsynths use GM mapping. in those cases you need a drum map to translate the notes to the correct mappings. I thought Session Drummer was GM mapped, but I don't know that for certain (I don't use it), but I wouldn't be surprised if JS is not GM mapped and you would need a drum map to translate the notes.

Thanks Beagle, I'm not sure that it could be that because most of the time it works fine. If it were a mapping issue it would be the same each time, right? It almost seems like a velocity issue but I am not sure how it could happen or how it could be fixed... I have a couple of tracks that I need to take a closer look at. Thanks for the reply.

yes, if you're using the same MIDI track and the same softsynth for output then it would be the same drum hits missing or wrong each time. however, if you're dropping MIDI notes you might need to increase your "prepare MIDI using" buffers. go to OPTIONS>GLOBAL>MIDI and increase the PREPARE USING XXX MSEC don't increase it TOO much or you'll have problems with that as well. but increase it to 500msec or so and see if that helps.

I never used Session Drummer or Jamsticks, but some drumsynths offer their own internal sequencer where you drag n drop pieces of beats etc. In this case Sonar midi clock is sent to the plugin to trigger it's internal clock which puts out audio accordingly. So tempo must match in project and these plugins. I don't know if it gives you a hint to try something new, but there is some setting that has to do with plugin needing tempo from project or not. Have a look in plugin manager if anything I've written applies. Are you running x64 or 32-bit Windows? Wrappers from 32-bit stuff are known not to support everything. I would try running through jbridge if that helps. But SD is shipped with Sonar so I would be surpriced.

I believe 500ms is already the default value ("X1"). I had to set mine to 1200ms,.. but you can't leave that as a permanent setting ! ("..or you'll have problems" as Beagle pointed out. 2 of my issues with buffers set to 1200ms: - input echo on audio tracks won't work - sync problems when recording audiotracks and yes,.. it seems that especially SD is prone to those kind of dropouts.

mine was set to 250 and I've never changed it, so I thought 250 was default. I don't know, tho.

Beagle, I did put it to 500 and it did work. Thank you so much for that as it had hexed me intermittently for while a long time. I appreciate it! U.
