X1 on XP?

I finally bit the bullet and upgraded from Producer 8.5.3 to X1.

But I also just bought my poor college son's Intel Quad Core / 4GB / 2 Drive desktop, with a nice 23" monitor and great graphics card.

The plan would have been to get the V-Studio 20, because I'm a guitarist, and need only limited audio capabilities.  The problem is, that I can't justify spending any more money on this hobby of mine, at least for now.

I have a M-Audio Quattro USB interface which I bought used, and haven't really used - the problem is that the drivers for it only go up to 32-bit XP.

So, would it be crazy for me to install XP on the system I have and install 32bit X1 on top of that?  Would audio performance suffer?  Would graphics performance suffer?  Did I mention that I also have an older version of Jamstix 2.x, which I believe only support 32-bit hosts?

I have no problem using XP.  We still use it at work.

Any comments or suggestions are welcome.

SONAR X1 still supports XP and will run fine. If you ever add on more than 4gigs of RAM then I'd recommend upgrading to Win7 X-64, but until then you should be fine.

Cool.  Thanks for the incredibly fast reply.  Shouldn't you be having a weekend?

There are many users here just like you & me who successfully run both 8.5.3 and X1 on XP32.

As Seth said, the only real limitation is the 4Gb Ram limit, but this only really becomes a problem when you're running Ram intensive plugs like BFD & some of the big orchestral libraries - but you can still do an incredible amount of work even with this limitation, just remember to bounce or freeze as you go.

I managed to load 14 instances of EWQLSO even when I had only 2Gb Ram.

So bite the bullet fella - you'll be fine

that's my backup system.  I recently set up a new computer with win7x64 and that's my main DAW, but my backup system is still the XP with X1 and previous versions.
