Setting up Guitar Rig 4
I've not recorded with an amp sim before. Does Guitar Rig just get dropped into the FX bin on the track I want to record the guitar on or is there a better method? If it's dropped into the FX bin I have to say I'm not much impressed with the results so far.

I use Guitar Rig on every project, couldn't do without it. The song in my signature has Guitar Rig on everything except the synth and drums. I always use it in the FX bin of the guitar or vocal track I'm working with. It works really well on bass and vocals as well. Here are some things to check ... X1 automatically set's your track interleave based on your input settings. So if you record a mono wav, such as guitar or mic, you have to manually set interleave to stereo to use a stereo effect such as Guitar Rig. If you are using Input Echo to hear the effects as you are recording or going through the presets, make sure you have monitoring of your dry signal muted on your sound card. I have to go in to my ASIO Control Panel and mute monitoring on my Fast Track Ultra, not sure how other manufacturer's do it. So in short, make sure track interleave is set to stereo and you are not monitoring a mix of your dry and wet signal. When you open up Guitar Rig you'll see at the very top 'Gate', 'Limit', and on the far right a cpu option. I always up the gate, turn on limiting and run my input signal hot. I also set my cpu setting to 'Hi'. Setting the cpu setting to 'Hi' uses a lot more of your CPU, but there is a very noticeable difference in sound quality. When you are done working on the track, freeze it so Guitar Rig isn't using up your CPU resources. Hope this helps. Bub

All Amp sims take a bit of work to get used to how best to create the sound you want. Guitar rig is a particularly deep and good sounding Amp Sim. Very versatile. Perservere with it and experiment. As with most plugins, presets are only a starting point.

Guitar Rig 4 is such a great upgrade over V3. I use it a lot, along with PODFarm and a few other VST's. I know in standalone mode you have to go into the settings to enable 64bit processing, not sure if that is an issue when used as a VST. Mick.

I tried the suggestions posted here and that has made some difference...no cigar yet. I've always recorded real amps and cabs and have gotten some pretty good sounds. I was curious about Guitar Rig 4 and thought I'd give it a go. It's OK but I've got a long way to go before it starts to sound like real amps...to me.

I am planning to download the full GR4, since the free LE version doesn't do what I need, but I have had great trouble with plug-ins and virtual instruments running Sonar in 64 bit. Any advice on installing and setting up GR in 64 bit Sonar? Thanks.

I picked up the upgrade the other day for 50 bucks. Its my favorite amp sim, I gave a friend my pod farm 2 platinum. You can get some great tones, the control room is amazing. Guitar rig 4 is x64, so no bit bridge problems. Been really stable on my system. The presets leave a lot to be desired, roll your own. But treat it like a "real" setup.

Another thing to remember when you're setting up your amps in Guitar Rig is, try to get the sound you want in your mix rather than making a full sounding amp preset and then tweak it later. My two favorite components are Control Room and Split. Between those two you can get a killer sound. @amiller ... you may have an input problem maybe? I was plugging in to my Fast Track Ultra and thought the sound was great. Then I got a tube preamp ... omg ... what a difference. Night and day. @konradh ... I can't remember if the initial download is the latest version. There has been some updates to it that fixed some odd problems. It will tell you if there are any updates available if you run the Service Center update thingy. I've seen some people complain about presets being missing. I never had that problem, but I always install everything by right clicking the setup file and telling it to install as 'administrator'. Bub

I don't think I have an issue with my signal chain (pre included)...check my signature.

I have GR 4 LE and the amps sound very bright and thin. Like there is no cab simulation at all. When I turn off the cab simulation it gets worse, so I know the cab is doing something. I read (and tried) all the above suggestions but still it sounds bad. I recorded a sample and it sounds the same when recorded. I thought maybe it had something to do with the monitor being on. BTW I have a Profire 610 interface. The really heavy distortion box, Demon, is the only one that sounds OK with the cabinet. I could, maybe record with it when I want heavy metal but I don't want that all the time ;) The Jump amp and cab is just too bright and thin, even with presence and treble at zero. I must be missing something? Thanks

amiller I don't think I have an issue with my signal chain (pre included)...check my signature. Sorry then. I don't know what else to suggest. Maybe check out the Guitar Rig forum? It sounds great here ... I bought it back when it was bundled with the 8.5 upgrade and it's been my go to amp sim ever since ... but I'm just a hobbyist, not a pro. I found just the opposite as you, and that is I could never get a good recording micing my amp. I have a Mesa Dual Rectifier Tremoverb 2 x 12 130W tube amp, but I don't have any good mic's. Mic's make a big difference. :) Good luck with! If I can get a good recording out of it anyone can. :) My specs: Intel i5/Gigabyte Mobo/4GB RAM Win 7 x64/X1 x64 Build 255 No 3rd party plugs other than Guitar Rig 4 and a couple of free synth's from NI. M-Audio Fast Track Ultra ART Pro MPA II Reference Series Tube Pre-Amp A 30 year old Peavey Celebrity Series EC-11 Mic ... daz it. :)
