video editing software recommendations?

Just wanted to see what you guys would recommend as far as video editing goes. I'm not doing anything super heavy duty just stuff for putting music to skate videos and basic YouTube video, music vlog stuff. I know Gimp is the answer to Photoshop as far as freeware goes but is there anything like Gimp for video. Freeware or non-free ware doesn't matter. Thanks

Vegas for the PC.  The big version has all kinds of effects, while the "Studio Version"  (less than $100) does all the basic stuff w/o the effects.  Worth the money, esp. as Sony runs specials so you can pick up Sound Forge Studio w/ it.

Awesome,....I've seen Vegas. Look nice. I wonder how the Studio version of Vegas would compare with the light version of Adobe Premiere? Hmmmm,...I'm going to have to look into that.  Thanks for the reply :)

I noticed that the basic version of Vegas was on sale at amazon (48% off).  I was interested and downloaded the demo... at least I thought.  Played around with it and had a lot of fun for a few hours only to realize that I demoed the pro version.  I have to admit it is a really cool program that doesn't seem too difficult to use.  I'm not sure how much you lose in the home studio version though.  If I had an extra $500 - $600 to blow I would totally pick up the Pro version for whatever that is worth.

Anyway just check out the demo and see if it works for you.

The big difference is the effects.  There might be a few other limitations, but I can't think of any.  Studio does HD.  There might be some codecs not supported, but you'd have to know to know.

TrakAxPC pro is one I came across.   www.trakax.com  It's got a free version and a "pro version".  The free version cuts out some of the extra features in the pro.

It's a good, basic, easy to use editing program, and the pro version only costs $25.

    Friendly support, as well.

Supposedly there's a new version coming out soon that will have a number of improvements.

Now, this isn't in the same league as Media Composer, Final Cut Pro, Premiere Pro or the upper end Vegas version.  But it doesn't seem to be aimed at that demographic. (and doesn't have the learning curve that some of those have)

I would suggest looking at it or downloading the demo of the pro version and try it out.

    For $25 it's a good deal.

    Sonar Platinum, Win 10 Pro 64, Intel i7 4770K, 16GB DDR3 1600, 1 x 250GB SSD, 2 x 2TB SATA, Roland OctaCapture, Roland XP-30 (Controller only), Shure KSM-44, Rode NT-1, Shure SM57, Numerous Guitar Amp sims, Komplete 6/7, Alchemy, Custom built guitar, Carvin Amplifiers.

I've been happy with CyberLink PowerDirector 9. You can get the 64-bit version for under $100 and it works well in Windows 7. You can also download a 30 day trial. If you've used video editors before, it's fairly intuitive and it has enough features to suit me without being overwhelming. I tried Adobe Premiere but it was much too complicated for my needs and I could never get satisfactory results.

Have used Corel VideoStudio X3 (and prior versions when it was a Ulead product) with success. Simple interface, not terribly complex in terms of editing features but more than capable for combining clips with FX, transitions, sound/voice tracks, etc. Also supports HD video if that's your thing. Might be worth downloading the demo and give it a spin. (Note: I have not used the latest X4 version, which is the all-Corel version at this point, though Ulead may very well still be doing the actual development.)

Actually, some of the X4 features could be handy... might have to upgrade.
