Upgrading from SHS 4

I will be upgrading soon, but need to find out what version I need to upgrade to.  SHS 7 or X1?  Will there be a problem taking my tracks from SHS 4 to the new product?
We play acoustic Bluegrass and all of our tracks are recorded, and I want to master a demo CD and burn some quality demos. So......

1. What version do I upgrade to that will finish off my project. I need mastering capabilities.
2. Point me to a thread or a book, or video that goes into the mastering process.
3. Do I need to upgrade my CD burner, to something other than a $60 Pioner burner? Suggestions, please.

SHS7 is no longer available as an upgrade from cakewalk.  you might could find some boxed versions in stores, but it would not be the "upgrade" pricing.  at this point cakewalk is only offering X1 essentials as a replacement for SHS.

there will not be a problem opening projects created in SHS with X1.

you have to have a DVD drive to install any version of X1.

as far as "mastering capabilities" - you'll have to be more specific what you need.  you can do "home mastering" in SHS4 using 3rd party VST's.

as far as "mastering" goes, I have X1 Producer, but for mastering I use Ozone.

Thanks, Beagle. I do have a CD player/ burner, but would like to know what quality burners are out there. By mastering, I mean getting a project ready to make copies. I dont know all the terms and tricks and plug ins, so any help would be apprecriated.

Also, are there certain disks to use as a master CD?

Mr. Mando - actually, you need to make sure you have a DVD drive, NOT just a CD drive!  the disks that the programs come on are DVD's NOT CD's!  if you don't have a DVD drive you cannot install X1!

Personally I'd get a DVD Burner and CD Burner combo.  that's what I use.  it will burn CD's or DVD's.  there are SATA and IDE.  Most motherboards these days only have 1 IDE controller on them and those are typically used for DVD/CD drives, but SATA are fine as well.

for burning CD's for distribution, I would only recommend Taiyo Yuden.  actually, they've been bought out by someone, and I forgot who.  I'll try to find that.  but yes, some CD's are not quality made and I've had problems with them before.  I only buy good quality CDs for burning important CDs.

mastering is a big big subject and makes a lot of people say a lot of things.  some of which are useful, some of which are urban legend or just plain "made up."

Ozone is a great program for "home mastering."  I have only had it myself for a short while, but it's really worth the price!  http://www.sweetwater.com/store/search.php?s=ozone+4
