A Song I Mixed is #1 on the Charts!

... well #1 on a chart... Its the Triple J "Unearthed" chart for unsigned bands - hopefully the next step is national radio play (maybe). Triple J is the national youth network radio station here in Australia & the song is #1 on the "Indie" chart & #3 overall. The artist is the band "Young Griffo" & the song is "Pennies" - mixed exclusively on Sonar 8.5PE... Check it out here:
http://www.triplejunearthed.com/Artists/View.aspx?artistid=39362

As you can see (hear), its more on the strength of the song than anything else - the site streams in mono for crying out loud!.. & at an awfully low quality.... so if anyone wants to know why mono-compatibility is important - This is exibit #1!

Here is the link to a higher quality version on my Soundcloud account http://soundcloud.com/coldroom-studios/pennies

BTW, here is the Band's official high quality, free download page for the tune: http://younggriffo.bandcamp.com/track/pennies-2

Excellent sounding mix, and i also quite enjoyed the song. maybe the kick could have had more body and less click, but these guys have a chance, i'd guess getting them on a support slot to the Foos or someone would be the next step...kudos dude!

Thanks mgh - yeah, the guys have great songs - I'm just about to finish up mixing the last track for their first EP soon... The other tracks are up on my Soundcloud site.

Great job!  The track sounds very good.  Great song and great performance by the band.  However my kids say nobody listen to rock anymore!?  Same thing with the kids in the youth group.

Hey vechug!  Thanks, I appreciate the comment... I think you are right - rock is not that popular among younger teens, but Triple J's demographic is mainly young adults 18-24, & indie rock in particular is more popular here in Australia than in the States.

GREAT sounding mix. I'm older than the demographic scope but I love the hook and structure of this tune. The vocals and harmonies are stellar. I also think this would be a very radio friendly tune here in the states. My only nit would be a little more GRIT to the distorted guitar tone making it a bit thicker sounding in the mix. All in all this is a FANTASTIC performance/production/mix. KUDOS gents!

Thanks drumstixkev!  The band are a 3 piece & have been honing their act with live performances - they are really tight players with the song as king always in their sights.

Listening on Headphones. At times the lead guitar seems panned a bit too hard to the right side, but is probably just fine with regular speakers.  Overall, lots of talent nice playing and production sounds great.

Thanks Tap!  I totally agree - In hindesight I think I would do things differently.  I was trying to mix in a "3 piece band" mindset at the time.  Because the guitar was basically one performance recorded through different amps/mics (with minimal overdubs), creating a wide stereo mix was more of a challenge... I have since thought about adopting a completely different approach to this type of thing.  Thank you very much for listening & commenting.
