Bought 2nd copy of X1 Producer, but only got one registration code

My brother has used 'free' copies of Cubase for years owing to lack of funds but much to my annoyance as I have religiously bought all my software (from Cakewalk version 3 all the way to Sonar X1). To celebrate his birthday I bought him Sonar X1 Producer - using my discount as a registered owner.
The thing is, he came round to install his this weekend but the registration code for the 2nd copy is the same as my copy - according to the Cakewalk store details.
Surely I should have received a new code for this? After all I have now bought two copies of Producer.
I wanted him to have his own legitimate version so that he can access all the customer support he might need and can upgrade in future.

We did install Sonar successfully but using the same code as my original and I concerned that Cakewalk believe I'm running one copy on multiple machines at the same time.

Any ideas?

We bought 2 copies of X1 Studio at work and they gave us only 1 code. We installed them on two machines and they registered fine with the 1 code.

I think most (all?) software makers have neglected the possibility that someone wants to buy
a (downloadable) software to someone else.

I've often looked for such an option, because my son is very much attached to computers, and some of my nephews etc. I'd like to be able to purchase a code that I could give as a gift in an envelope, and then this person could download the software directly to his machine. If that was possible, I'd buy about a dozen of different software-gifts every year, because it would be so easy.
Boxed versions are more expensive, and there are many software you can't even buy boxed.

I'd be interested to hear the solution to your problem. I guess you need to contact Cakewalk.
    Good luck!

the problem is that you're buying a 2nd copy "using my discount as a registered owner."  technically he still is not an owner of X1, you are the owner of 2 copies.

I would think that cakewalk would have given you a 2nd registration, but I don't know their rules specifically about this.  you may have to call them and verify.

I wish that there was at least some kind of "family discount".  I've got a son or two I'd eventually like to buy the program for...

The only thing CW sells online concerning Sonar are upgrades.
To purchase a *new* license one needs to puchase from a retailer such as sweetwater and pay full price.

Call CW and see what they are willing to do for you.  Posting in the forum isn't going to get you help.

    Best wishes!

Many thanks to all for your comments. In hindisght, as you pointed out, I was not buying a standalone copy but a 2nd upgrade, therefore no new code.  I may contact Cakewalk to discuss further. I do agree that registered users should be able to buy discounted packages for family members though this might be open to abuse.
