Sonar does it again, rises to top of the charts

http://www.digitalmusicdoctor.com/press/music_software_popularity_2011Q1.htm

Submitted for what it's worth, but this is an unprecedented 2nd time for something not protools.

From the article:

Digital Music Doctor announces the results of the Music Software Internet Popularity Index for the first quarter of 2011. For the second quarter in a row Cakewalk Sonar ousted Avid Pro Tools for the top ranking. Pro Tools previously had ranked first for every quarter in the five-year history of this analysis.

"Good sales make good updates." Didn't Robert Frost say that? (Hey, no pouncing, I was JK! [just kidding])

he does that stuff every year and people have posted a link to this site and his "findings" every year.  it means absolutely nothing.  it's based on internet SEARCHES, not sales, not actual usage, just what people have googled.

Without a very detailed explanation on how those numbers were achieved so that they can be reproduced, they are meaningless. The guy might well be picking the numbers out of a hat. Who knows?

It clearly states on his site This index is based on quarterly Internet search activity on Google, Yahoo, Microsoft and AOL . Collectively these 4 search engines represent approximately 95 percent of the searches on the Internet. Over 100 search terms are used to construct this index, and 15 music software products are tracked. An annual average of the past four quarters is also included for comparison.

I think it is a little more valid than picking numbers out of a hat.  Granted it doesn't mean more people own sonar than protools but I think it is somewhat valid if were talking popularity.  Sonar is number 4 in the top 10 at KVR for all products and is the only host on the list.  It ranks number 1 on the host list.

I bet over half of those searches are from people who are having problems and are searching the forums through Google because the forum search function doesn't work.

This still means nothing. They might be inadvertently counting all the people that are looking for info on real sonars for all we know.

Without a complete explanation of the research methodology so that it can be reproduced, it is meaningless. That site has already demonstrated that their other "reports" are bogus and useless so there is no reason to consider this one valid.

Aren't those from publicly listed companies that need to publish annual reports for their share holders? Aren't all DAW companies privately owned? I could be wrong.

Heh. I just looked through the financial statements of both Roland and Yamaha  and the one thing I can conclude is that both Cakewalk and Steinberg are peanuts compared to the rest of their businesses! They each get one single mention in the respective documents but without any specific financial numbers let alone any sales numbers for specific products.

The total Roland sales for Professional video, Professional audio and computer music equipment amount to  72 million U.S. dollars. That includes Edirol, Boss, Roland and Cakewalk branded products. The total sales for all of Roland for 2010 was about 980 million dollars...

If you look at Yamaha it is even more of a drop in the ocean: Total sales for 2010 is 4,5 billion dollars...

I don't think it tells you anything at all about popularity of the products, only curiosity about them.  I'll bet if you did a ranking of people searched on this quarter you would find Osama Bin Ladin at the top or near the top of the list.  That wouldn't say a thing about his popularity with the people who googled him.  It only says that people were interested in information about him.  So he was a popular subject....not a poplular person.

These stats, whether they are accurate or not, are meaningless to me. Why would I care what other people like or use? As long as the tools that I use are working for me I am satisfied. Even if SONAR was at the bottom of every poll or list, it works for me and allows me to deliver the services and products I need, I am happy.

I suppose it is amusing to see what is popular, but if my tools were unpopular with the masses, it would not make me completely change what I am doing.
