Sonar X1 Producer CD Creation - RESOLVED
Can someone explain to me the best way to take a project and burn it to a CD? I have just downloaded the Sonar X1 trial and have not been able to burn a song to a CD. I heard that there are several ways of doing this, and I'm looking for the easiest, quickest way. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Ken

i don't use sonar for cds, i use cd architect, but there are probably many other choices. get each of your tracks to final mix stage, export as wavs. then use a cd-making program. you can also add mastering fx as well...

Is there a program to export as wavs? I've never got this far before and I want to take my finished mix and save it on a CD.

Steps to exporting your projects Press CTL-A - This selects all tracks and clips in your project. Selecting CTL-A should highlight your timeline, but if you want to only export part of the project, you go to the time ruler with your mouse and left click and drag all the area's you want exported. Then you select File / Export / Audio. Now your export window will come up. - In the look in drop down box, you define the export location to the spot you want your exported file to go.
- For the file Name, you type the name you want.
- For File type, you select the type. Wave would be your choice for CD burning and MP3 converting.
- For the Source Category, you should select Main Outs
- The channel Format should be Stereo
- The Sample Rate should be 44100
- The bit Depth should be 16
- The Dithering should be one of the Powr's 1, 2 or 3. (You dither when going form a higher bit depth to a lower bit depth)
- I like using powr-3.
- Make sure all your appropriate boxes are checked. Especially the 64bit engine and Fast bounce. (Some non-native synths may not like fast bounce. If you run into one of them, just disable fast bounce and it will export)
- Press export.

Thanks, CJ. As always, I appreciate your help! I'll give this a try. I press CTL-A with the project open and then export?

Always with your project open. CTRL -A will highlight all your tracks and the timeline. You may want to adjust your timeline with your mouse in some instances. You'll see what I mean when you try it. Experiment with your timeline by hovering/clicking your mouse over it and sliding it across it. what ever is highlighted, is what will be exported.. Cj

Then once you have the WAV files, you need to burn them to a CD using Sonar or another tool like Nero, or Cakewalk Audio Creator, or CD Architect, etc...

Yah SONAR won't burn redbook CDs (the defacto standard for audio discs) so you'll need a separate burning program for that. They range from free to moderate cost. The reason you CTRL-A is to make sure the whole project and not part of a project is selected. Somewhat paradoxically, if you have NOTHING selected you could bypass this step as SONAR will assume you mean the whole project, but many of us use CTRL-A as a failsafe just in case there's a random selected clip in the project.

For dithering, I have read and I use this principle: Power 2 dither is for less dynamic music, Rock, Dance and the like where as Power 3 is for dynamic music, like classical and or acoustic music but CJ is the mastering expert around here. You need a redbook CD burning program. This allows you to write P&Q code, basically track information, it also allows you to do stuff like put a hidden track onto a cd. Audio Creator does this and it only costs around $50-60 Australian, it also comes with an MP3 encoder and a couple of other tools. It is a little buggy, but for the price, meh. Don't master in Audio Creator though, use Sonar version whatever, just use Audio Creator to assemble your CD.

Thank you for all your help. Mission accomplished! I was able to export the wav files and burn the CD. I don't know what program was used, I just clicked on 'burn CD' and it worked. I was able to play it back on Windows Media Player. Thanks again!

Play it in a CD-player to make sure it works. Computers can play discs that CD-players can not.

I use Nero for audio CD burning and also burn at 8X so the CD will play on practically all audio CD players. Audio CD's (NOT MP3) burned at higher speeds can have problems playing in older audio CD players and either skip or not play at all. I also use (Taiyo Yuden) ink-jet printable discs with an Epson printer that prints on CD/DVD's. NEVER use Paper Labels, they can flake off and worst case cause CD player failures. If you have a SATA CD/DVD burner probably 16X is as low as it will go. I have a bank of 5 USB connected PATA (IDE) drives that I use for Audio production and they will burn at 8X.

I always found using Markers much easier to use to export a selection of the timeline. Most projects I create have markers for the intro, verse 1, chorus 1, chorus 2, etc. What also needs to be created is an "End of Song" marker to define the end of the timeline (end of song). When you're ready to export do a CTRL-A to select all tracks. If you want only specific tracks then CTRL-click the tracks you don't want in the export after doing the CTRL-A. After the tracks are selected bring up the Markers window (Alt-Shift-4). Now highlight the first section marker to be exported and then CTRL-left click the last section marker which will select everything inbetween. Do not select the "End of Song" marker. It's not selected because each marker highlighted will select everything from the beginning of that marker to the beginning of the next marker. Once everything is highlighted do the export.
