From Producer 8.53 to X1 - Taking the plunge - Advice?
I have held off upgrading to X1 because my old computer didn't have the specs to support it. To make a long story short, I have a new computer arriving and I recently went for the X1 Upgrade. While I am looking forward to the upgrade, I am also nervous about the transition - Specifically the glitches I might encounter moving from a 32 bit to 64 bit environment (From Windows XP to Windows 7) For example, I will be using my MAudio Delta 1010 and I will be getting the latest Windows 7 64bit Drivers. I am hoping that people who have made a similar transition might chime in here with any advice - things they wish they knew when they upgraded. I would greatly appreciate any information or advice anyone has. I am anxious to get past the upgrade stage and back to making music. Thanks in Advance!

Install 32-bit 8.5 alongside X1 on your new computer. Use it when you want to rework old projects, and to complete current projects. For learning your way around X1 and resolving 64-bit plugin issues, make a disposable copy of one of your larger existing projects and use that as your training room.

I am also using the 1010...I downloaded the latest drivers and have had zero troubles with it. X1 has been a little buggy, but all in all I am very happy with it. I was going to install it next to PE 7 but I decided on a clean install on a new machine. I still have PE 7 running on another computer but I haven't had to use it since I moved to X1. chuck

Great advice from bitflipper. I have 32 and 64 bit installed for both 5.8.3 and X1. Old stuff stays in 8.5.3, new stuff is going well in X1. I jump back and forth from 32 bit -vs- 64 bit, but 64 bit is stable for me. I`m using less and less of any 32bit stuff. Good luck and have fun. You mention getting a new computer but don't mention what it is? I'm also assuming this new system will be dedicated only to SONAR - yes???? What are the specs - laptop, desktop, RAM, processor, brand, hard drives, etc????? Any off-the-shelf computer (HP, Compaq, Dell, Gateway, etc) will need to be stripped down to the very basics. The first step is to remove all the little processing stealing apps the manufacturer installs. Next would be to apply OS tweaks like removing unnecessary services, disabling secondary NICs (and maybe primary if you don't want any network access) and the floppy controller in Manage Hardware, etc. To me the only way to really strip down the system is to install a retail version of Windows 7 64-bit. Then you only have to deal with OS tweaks and not have to worry about or run into left over manufacturer stuff. Either way - retail OS install or stripped down original OS - if you EVER have to call for support you will not get it. The only support will be, "please use the system restore disks that came with the system to restore the computer to the original system specs. Call us back if there is still a problem." Another thing to do after receiving the system is to do Windows Update until there are no more Windows updates to do. Only when the system is stripped down to the very basics and the audio interface is installed and working would I proceed with installing SONAR. I'm also assuming you are installing an upgrade version of X1 which I believe will require you to installed previous versions of SONAR (like 8.5 and maybe 8 if 8.5 was an upgrade only too - that's what I had to do) before you can install X1. This is not a bad thing as it allows you to work with your 8.5.3 version projects as is. The only problem may be with some plug-ins since it's 64-bit and not 32-bit. Transitions are tough no matter what the application is (SONAR, PT, Windows, Office, etc.) but IMO worth the effort. John

if you are going native 64 , with W7.. i'd say go for it. But i highly recomend more RAM. Just be prepared for a re-learning( not as severe as a curve) process of where things are, and there are things you dont have to do anymore from previous versions.. i downloaded on the release date 12/8/10 and by that friday i was rolling.. im a real-time musician, so i dont use alot of Sonars editing features, so my main issues have only been graphical bugs with the interface..outside of that, i have had more fun with X1 as far as workflow than previous versions.

Make sure you have the latest build of X1. Should be 255. It fixed a real quirky issue when using more than one MIDI controller which then interfered with control surfaces. It also seemed to treat the ASIO drivers better. I came from 8.5.3 that was rock solid...now X1 is running with the big dawgs

Thanks for all the advice and suggestions. Bitflipper, I especially like your idea of installing the previous version in 32 bit and testing the waters with X1 in 64 bit. Chuck, I am also glad to hear someone using a 1010 with no problems. I know it's an old sound card - but it's been treating me well and it suits my purposes. John, the machine I am getting is an ACER Aspire with 6GB of memory and a 3.2 GHz processor. It has a 1 Tb hard drive - but I am adding a 2nd 1 TB HD (7200 Rpm) for my audio projects. I don't know how much extra stuff Acer puts on the system - but I am going to do my best to clean up the memory hog apps. The main thing I have to deal with is getting all my old VST and VSTi Plugins moved over. (also I want to bring over my instrument definitions, wave impulses, soundfonts, etc etc.) I am hoping I don't have too much of a hassle getting some of my old 32 bit stuff working in the 64 bit environment. Thanks again for the suggestions! I am very psyched to get it all going and take X1 for a test spin! Any other suggestions are very welcome. I am going to get everything going (knock on wood) this weekend.
