No arguments from me. You'll probably get some purists in an uproar though, hehe. "Oh you can't do that by God!!"... Jim Morrison used to record vocal takes in a bathroom as well. If the end result is good that's all that should matter. Good stuff!

Edit: Now I need a 50' mic cord to reach my bathroom, damn it!

I love that film. Les Paul is truly the patron saint of home recordists.

Every once in a while some noob on a forum wisely asks the fundamental question: is it even possible to make a commercially successful record in a home studio? Les Paul had no less than 46 (!) charting hits, most recorded in his kitchen/living room/bathroom.

We should note, however, that the vocal mic shown in that clip would be far beyond most of our budgets today.

LOL. How 'bout the layering on those harmony vox? Pretty slick! Really sounded like a modern software harmonizer.  Cool stuff indeed.

Thx for that. Nearly inspiring enough to pull out the Porta One and create a whole song with it.

Just an R44? Ever sing through one? It's smooth as silk. RCA stopped making them long ago, but you can buy an exact replica from Wes Dooley for a mere $3,600.

That's the irony isn't it... all those hand made point to point Ampex preamps Les is getting by with might be called overpriced snake oil by today's crowd of professionals at consuming, cheap-skate-hero-worshiping, IC chip excuse making, constant upgrade cycle aficionados.

If you go ahead and get the good stuff you'll rarely need to upgrade after that.

    Take it from Les.

    best regards,
    mike

It should be mandatory that any aspiring or experienced producer/engineer must own the "Chasing Sound" DVD! Here in Canada it's about $20 - so there is no excuse.

If you don't have it, go find a copy of that DVD! You will not be disappointed. It will likely leave your head spinning with how creative Les Paul really was.

Don't fix it in the mix ... Fix it in the take!

Heh...yeah, I guess "just" may have been the wrong choice of words...it certainly isn't pocket change. But yeah, I've heard/used them and they're nice.
I guess what I really was wondering was if that was an R44 or if it was something else that just looked like an R44.

Heh. That is the funniest thing I've read all day.  Probably because it will come true.  Except it will be by UA, will require a UAD to run and will only allow 1 instance on a UAD-2 quad (cause, ya know, it's exquisitely modeled)

It's available on Netflix, too. While you're there, pick up the Tom Dowd documentary, "The Language of Music".

Another interesting character from the era of seat-of-the-pants homemade records is Joe Meek. I don't know that anyone has ever made a video documentary about him, but several biographies exist. The one I read was called "Creative Music Production: Joe Meek's Bold Techniques". Compared to Les Paul, Meek was a total know-nothing, but he was fearless in his profound technical ignorance and made some very memorable records through pure creativity.
