Anyone have something good or bad to say about Toshiba Laptops?

Looking at a Toshiba i5 with 4GB Ram, Win 7 with eSata, PCI Express port, no Firewire etc. I hear they're solid and good value. I'll be running it purely as a recording DAW for location work, coupled with an RME UFX on USB. Planning to use an eSata drive for Audio. Input is welcome!

Just bought a Toshiba C655-S5195 at Fry's Electronics for my wife... $399 and a great little laptop (only Core i3, 4 gig ram)... But yeah, between an Asus or Toshiba laptop, you're probably getting the most reliable laptop available when it comes to longevity and failure rates over time. Back when I sold laptops (over 13 years ago) I always felt good about selling a Toshiba.

My first DAW laptop was a Toshiba too, but was stolen during a house break-in. At that time, it came stock with a TI Firewire chipset and was rock solid with Sonar... The Dell replacement on the otherhand...... :(

Run the dpc latency checker on it first

Not sure about the usb3 - it had a funny slot on it (like something between a mini usb and a mini FW - salsey didn't know what it was! :O)

Ofcourse I'll run DPC on it - they said I can even bring in my gear, as well as we have a new law in SA that means you can return anything (and I mean anything - well, probably ALMOST..) within 7 days, so thats plenty time to run the stress tests in the studio where it matters.

But the fact that it has no FW cheers me up - cause THAT's where the trouble starts. It has an Express slot and I have a Sunix (TI) FW card.

    We'll see!

I have a Toshiba Laptop and its been great for recording. It had a firewire port and ran really smoothly with my Audio Echo firewire card. Mind you it wasnt cheap. It was about 1100 Euro when I bought it so about 1500 US Dollars at the time I suppose. Basically I am a fan of Toshiba Laptops. In my experience they are solid and reliable. Thats my feedback for you.

+1 for dpc latency checker.  buy it, bring it home, test it, if it fails take it back.....
