HELP - Horrible output from perfect mix.

Hi people.

Basically I have a great mix done as my first real project in Sonar.
I own expensive monitors, have a 192k card, and have a fully sound treated studio.

I have spent the last 6 hours or so repeatedly trying export settings and am finding that
every single one sounds absolutely sh*t.

It sounds like a multiband compression was overused (which I am not using at all) and also
that someone was playing around with the master volume at times (fading up and down slightly).
It's not my equipment, its something to do with the export process or something.
I think I have tried every combination of output settings possible now and none of the exports
are usable.

If anyone knows what this is please help. I am going insane with the thought that all the work
I put into recording everything would be wasted (I also am on a deadline).

Thanks.

more details will be needed.  what "192k card" do you have?  what sampling rate are you running your project at?  192?  are you mixing down to 44.1kHz?  are you using ASIO driver mode?  if not, do you have your onboard soundcard disabled?  if not, you might have it in the playback, therefore using it as the rendering converters for mixdown.

do you have all of your tracks and buses routed through the master bus?  if you have any bus or track routed directly to the soundcard then you're summing at the soundcard instead of in the project which can easily cause overs that you don't know about.

I agree with Beagle.. more info is needed. Also, does your sound card have software that could have a compressor on, I know some of the EMU cards have different things on them in their control panel.

Also are mixing down to wav or mp3?  If mp3, what software?

How are you selecting the tracks and buses you are exporting?

How about some screenshots of your routing, Gliphic?

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

    Hey,

I actually only woke up recently (I work unusual hours) and I just assumed the forum would automatically email me updates on threads I started.

I have since tested the mixes on many different speakers and the situation is bizzarre. At the time I was testing before I was listening through some logitech headphones.  I was only testing these because I would have woken the neighbors had I been using my studio speakers (I am in Australia). I assumed there was a problem with the output because the issues I described happened on every mix, at specific parts of the song.
There would be 16 bars where the 2nd 8 was a repeat of the first, yet in every mix without fail the 2nd 8 would fade down in volume and then back up again. Another would sound fine dynamically and then sound like someone turn on the multiband (as said before).

Its confusing because I have never had any issues using the phones with other music and I even played some other music to see if it happened (and it didn't).

Having tried it on 3 other speakers and phones now I think I am ok however the issue is still wierd as f**k..

Yes there's a Subscribe to thread option I believe will send you email. I've never used it,  If I post a question I stay on the form for an hour or so as that is when you'll get the most reply's. After a bit your thread will fade away into the vast bin of old threads only to be randomly dredged up by Google. Hope your problem is under control.
