moving track and/or clip automation...

Well, I've perused the section of my X1 Power book on automation...albeit while enjoying a very nice Hayman Old Tom Martini on the back deck and I still haven't found the answer to my my latest query.

Is it possible to move volume and/or pan automation when you move clips/tracks that contain it.

Here's my problem.  Say I've got (as I did today) several spots that were very similar but whose "tags" came in at various times (i.e. 24.5 , 24.8, 25.2, etc.....).  What I was hoping to do was just move the music, announcer tag and sound effect tracks a skosh to the right or left as I needed.  But when I did I seemed to screw up the automation...so I had to redo it separately for every track on every spot.  Is there a way to just click and drag a track/clip yet keep it's automation intact???

Or am I (like so many other times) just doing it wrong??

How are you moving the clips? If you click/drag them, the automation data should move with the clip.

Glad to hear you're enjoying the book... thanks!

automation is the bane of my existence.  I have been stammered by that very thing you mention.  I have also wondered if there's a way to do an 'offset'...because I did a solo track automation to suit the line, however i need to pull the overall volume up or down...I currently cheat and use Boost11 plug just to turn a volume knob, where I'd rather select the ENTIRE automation line(s) and say +4.2dB or something sensible like that...waaay less memory overhead.

Automation too, is the single-handed killer of the app on 3 systems now, for me.  All different platforms, different Sonar revs...alll die in the same place.

Well, this is in 8.5.3 I'm talking about.  But...it seems to me that there should be a hotkey that lets you either a:  slide the clip/track backward or forward in time and KEEP the automation intact...OR... slide the clip/track backward or forward in time and LET THE AUTOMATION STAY WHERE IT IS.  If this is not possible then it is dumb.  Numbskullian.  Outmoded.  At best.

Yes, there is an Offset Mode. Press O to toggle the mode on/off. With the mode on, you can adjust the track volume to offset the envelope values so that you don't have to edit the entire envelope.

Oh, well I assumed you were talking about X1 since this is the X1 forum.

What I mentioned earlier works in X1.

I can't seem to get envelopes to do what I want them to, when it comes to moving / copying them.

    • The envelopes automatically move when you move a clip (sometimes I don't want this to happen).
    • If you do copy a clip over by control dragging, the new clip has the automation (sometimes)
    • If you do a copy a clip over by copy and then paste, the pasted clip keeps the automation and the original loses it. Delete the original and paste over it and they both have automation again.. grrr.
    • Can't just hold control and drag copy an envelope (that would be nice)
The new envelope focus controls in X1 are a dream come true. If we could just get them to make the rest of their use make sense.

    Sweet Scott!  Muchas gracias.

I would like to see another checkbox in the copy/paste/clone type functionality, where I could pull the automation object (and it should be an object that's moveable edititable copyable pastable) along or leave it, duplicate it, yadda yadda...  I imagine, say a compression on a solo line...I would envision taking that automation envelope and apply it to a master bus compression, voila! Ducking Compression on a slider!  (Side Chaining is a whole 'nuther thread to spin -- I LOVE how Sonar is growing up!!)

I can think of a ton of ways to utilize automation enveolopes as I would "Format Painter" in Word/Excel etc...

(still does not effect the fact that its during Automation process, or when I'm tweaking a particular section --repeats/loop enabled-  that the application is at its very weakest, and almost without fail, I get the dreaded pasty-white nonresponsive screen.)
Forgive me Father, for I have Sinned
I blame myself, because I'm moving at the speed of my mind saying "more here" "less here" "ooh...that stuck out fix it"...so on each pass I'm twising knobs and all that.  What it feels like is I'm passing commands faster than the  engine wants to receive them, so I overrun and it does not handle the exceptions.  I acknowledge that its probably my fault for being OCD and in a hurry; as the engine resets and preps to begin anew --press stop/pasue/play--- that seems to be where it breaks for me.  Doubleclick-open a VSD compressor and immediately drag a control knob...BOOM...dead in the water.  Not every time, but only inopportune times.  I have a fast and powerful system, but still not as fast as my head I guess. )

    • The envelopes automatically move when you move a clip (sometimes I don't want this to happen).
If you don't want it to happen, then you would need to do a cut/paste instead of a basic move.

    • If you do copy a clip over by control dragging, the new clip has the automation (sometimes)
Not sure what's happening there. Maybe a bug?
    • If you do a copy a clip over by copy and then paste, the pasted clip keeps the automation and the original loses it. Delete the original and paste over it and they both have automation again.. grrr.
Again... maybe a bug? Not sure.
    • Can't just hold control and drag copy an envelope (that would be nice)
    Yep, that would be cool.
