CRC error

Hi, was wondering if any PC experts can give me some insight here

1. I downloaded Amplitube Free to my internet PC
2. I burned 2 copies to CD using Nero and used the 'verify files copied' option, Nero
verified the copies
3. I tried to install Amplitube Free on my audio PC and got a CRC error when copying a .dll file
4. I tried the other CD and i still got the error
5. I tried an external CD drive with both CD's and i still got the error
6. I ran SFC /scannow, and dskchk. dskchk found errors and corrected, the second dskchk reported no problems
7. I tried installing again and got the error again
8. On my internet PC i copied the files from CD to a USB thumbdrive
9. I used the thumbdrive to sucessfully install Amplitube Free on the audio PC

A. Where do you think the problem was?, could the CD be bad but still be able to copy the files to the USB thumbdrive which i then used to install without error

B. Do you think im safe to assume the install from the thumbdrive is good?

Thanks all, have a great weekend!:)

ps... Im running Windows 7 home premium 32-bit on both PC's

CRC--if I remember correctly--is an acronym for Cyclic Redundancy Check.  To over simplify, it's a parity check.  In this case, I'm guessing that it's being used as copy protection.  Most CD-R drives will auto-correct when they encounter a bad bit.  Some software companies use that function to deliberately put a bad bit on a disc and then check if the state of that bit to determine if the CD is a legal copy.

On the other hand, maybe it's actually some bad data and you can download the file again fix things.  Or download directly to your music PC and skip the copying.  I know, I don't have my music PC on the internet either.  Just an idea.

    Good luck.

CRC is a cyclic redundancy code used to check the integrity of the data. As old55 mentioned, added data (parity bits) are added to data downloaded which is used to check the integrity of the data intended. When you install the program, the parity is checked against the data using the CRC algorithm. if there is a mismatch, then chances are the data has been corrupted. It would also be used as copy protection.

thanks for the replies, i already know what a CRC error is, i was wondering mainly if anyone knew why it would be successful installing from a USB thumbdrive and not the CD as i copied the files to the thumbdrive from the CD

im thinking it's not about copy protection, Amplitube 3 Free is a free app anyone can download from the IK multimedia web site, its actually a darned good offer that includes 9 pedals, 4 amps, 5 cabs, 3 mics, 2 rack effects, and a tuner...

It's probably just a dropped bit that was not corrected properly by the CD drive.  Sometimes the simplest answer is the right one.

    Have a great weekend, too.
