Maybe you can help with latency?

My DAW is Sonar X1. Computer: Win 7, 64bit, 24gigs of RAM, i7 970x processor (overclocked), Maudio Fast Track Pro.

Sonar X1, has been working fine, no latency. Then when I add T-racks Pro 3.5, the entire program lags/latent. Without T-Racks, I can adjust meters and parameters in real-time with no delay. When I use a T-Racks as a VST Plugin, then Sonar begins to lag on every track, every meter and adjustment.

For example, I have a bass track that I want to increase the volume on. Simply pull up the fader. Real-time results. No problem. Add T-racks, pull up the fader, now I have to wait a over a second for a result. This makes for fine tuning a mix quite difficult. Furthermore, it is every track that takes on this behavior even if T-racks is not added as a plugin.

Another funny thing is that, it doesn't matter if I add T-racks plug-in on 1 track or 5 of them, the delay is the same and behaivor does not change no matter how many times I added T-Racks. I would think that every time I add the plug-in, it would get worse.

Can someone lead me to a solution to this? This problem on happens with T-Racks. Thanks!

Read up on Plug-in Delay Compensation. Some plug-ins need a buffer of their own to allow time for the heavy number-crunching they do. In order to keep all other tracks in sync with the track that has the plug on it, SONAR automatically applies PDC, causing everything to be delayed equally.

Since the latency period that one plug needs can be used by another, PDC latency is not additive. The latency only has to be high enough to accommodate the plug-in with the biggest buffer (some plugs are adjustable to trade quality for lower latency), and all others will do their thing within that window.

There is a PDC Override feature that allows you to eliminate PDC from input monitored tracks for recording new tracks without added monitoring latency, but it won't help with existing audio tracks. Basically you just want to avoid plug-ins that need lots of PDC until later in the mixing/mastering process.

I have a post called... Help... My sonar quit playing nice...  I ran into the exact same problem.  I've not had any problems till just recently.  It had to do with plugin delay compensation when all was said and done.  I never got it adjusted out.  Freezing or bouncing tracks may help, i didn't try that.  I just eliminated the instance of the vst and started over with my plugins while avoiding the offending one until I am done or whenever I just want to the hear the mix to get a feel of the sound that I want to achieve.

    TRackS -> Preferences ->

    select - Lowest Latency
    deselect - Oversampling
deselect - Oversampling & Linear Phase

Sonar doesn't seem to play nice with high latency plugs... gets all screwy.
Oh, high latency plugs on Sonar Bus = even more screwiness :S

Add T-racks, pull up the fader, now I have to wait a over a second for a result

you will find the higher your ASIO Buffer is set at or the higher your WDM mode is, the longer it takes for things to react in sonar. The solution is to have the lowest possible ASIO buffer or WDM slider position.

If its just T-racks, there may be a latency setting in the plugin. i would refer to the t-racks pdf.

Good info from everyone else. The only comment I had is that you have a beast of a computer, but a terrible audio IO. I don't understand ;). I don't want to be negative or deter you from your goals, but I've seen nothing but problems from the fastrack hardware. I'm a fan of the maudio profire (used to be my primary interface) and didn't have issues with it.

On a friends system I set up, his fastrack (his choice to buy it, not mine) has to be set at around 10ms latency or it has horrendous pop and crackle issue.

One thing to add is that you shouldn't need it for VSTs, but are you running sonar as administrator? I've seen various issues with not running admin for DXis.

    Just a thought.
