Philz and I were partial to the Taylor C110ce (or the C114ce, still a debate on that one). ~$800.

I see no need for the electronics but as Philz sez "The cutaway is useful". The non electronics is not a cutaway.

    Martin DCX1E $699.00

Built in electronics. Modified Low Oval Neck shape. Cutaway body. They have several neck shapes and this one feels the most comfortable to me.

Martin is getting the price of some of their guitars down by using HPL (High Pressure Laminate). HPL is the same stuff fake hard wood floors are made out of.

I've played a couple and they seem to have a fuller sound than all natural wood Martin. Although, the ones I played were off the rack and the strings were well worn in. You know how acoustic strings sound once they lose their 'newness'.

At least I know I can walk on it and it won't scuff.

I recently test-played a couple dozen guitars in that price range for a friend that wanted to learn.  Surprisingly, I recommended Tanglewood, a company i'd never heard of or played before that day.
This one sounded and felt fantastic:  http://www.tanglewoodguitars.co.uk/products/acoustic/premier/tw155/TW155AS.html

Well, it's not what you're after I'm sure but I am now firmly convinced the best six string acoustic out there under $700 is bar none the Wechter Nashville High Strung Elite Cutaway.  It is a recent acquisition and I just about cannot put the dern thing down.  It is absolutely the best musical gear purchase I have made in years and years.  Plus I believe it is the only guitar of it's kind being made anywhere today.  No serious recordist or studio should be without one.  The build quality is easily comparable to way more expensive Taylors (which is my preferred brand).  Abe Wechter and ALL his offerings bear serious study before purchasing any brand.  How he sells these things at this price point is beyond me...but I'm awful glad he can.

One caveat, of course, if you are not familiar with a "Nashville High Strung" guitar do NOT buy this guitar until and unless you know what it does and want to add it to your collection.  But, oh my goodness...it's just the bees knees!!

Why would you need a cut away on a high strung?

    That's like xtra high.

Like Matt, I was recently test driving Martins and Taylors looking for a decent Acoustic to play and record, and like Matt, I came across the Normans which I never heard of before and am quite happy with. I think the sound and quality were quite comparable to many of the higher priced Martins and Taylors that I played.

thanks guys. This is for a friend and I'm clueless about what is available. I've always felt though, if it feels and plays good, I don't really care what it sounds like. I mean they all pretty much sound like, um, geetars, eh.

100% in agreement with ya. Don't own it yet but got to play it and like you it smoked my brain how sweet it was. Nothing better in that price range. Cool video on Sweetwater too with Abe givin' the low down and such.

Thats a tough question for me. Im one of those that have to play and connect with the guitar before I buy.  Ive played lesser priced ones compaired to $4000 Gibsons and Taylors and so on and have been happier with ones I didnt expect to be finding that I liked the tones, the build and feel much better.  So for me I have to play everyone available when going to buy and the one that I connect with and feels right is the one I go with keeping in mind you get what ya pay for.

If I walked on it, scuffing would be the least of it's worries.

I have always been impressed with the sound of seagull guitars.  And you do not have to spend 700 to get a nice cutaway with great sounding electronics.  Very easy to play too.

I also played some nice Seagull acoustics (don't remember the actual models).  My next purchase will be an acoustic in this price range (so I don't have to take my nice Taylor to the park, on the boat, etc.). I'll probably either get a Seagull or an Epiphone Masterbilt (they have real wood back & sides and play really nice).

I've never played a Wechter but I've heard good things.
