Is there a way to record audio and Video at the same time with sonar ?

Is there any way I could record my drums through Sonar and set up a video camera linked to it some how so that it will capture all the video as its being played

Or would I need something else for this ?

Ive never done any video work so I need all the advice I can on this

Thanks for all help in advance

Sonar doesn't record video.  You'll need another app for that.  I use Sony Vegas Studio and it will record video and one stereo track together.

1. Set up your mics to record your drums.
2. Set up your camera to record the video.
3. Start SONAR recording your drums and then start the video camera recording.
4. Clap your hands loudly so you can use that as a sync point.
5. Record your performance.
6. Stop both SONAR and video recording.

Now you can transfer the video to the PC as a video file. Import the video into SONAR. Line up the hand clap in the audio portion of the video to the audio in SONAR. And now you can continue composing to the video.

Or if you don't need to compose any more, you'll need to export the audio from SONAR and then import that along with the video into another program like Sony Vegas so you can edit the video. In this case, you'll still need to line up the hand clap as well.

Vintagevibe's method is easier when you want a simple recording but I think Scott G's method will give better overall audio.  I use a good camera (I think it's pretty good - Canon XH-A1s) with Rode NT5a and XLR inputs and it is still not as good as recording the audio with the same equipment separately into Sonar and my laptop.  Maybe its the fact that with the camera I'm recording to DV tape then transfering it to disk?

4. Clap your hands loudly so you can use that as a sync point.

The OP probably figured this out but I'll mention it because I've given similar advice before to a friend who missed this essential point:

Clap your hands while your hands are in the camera's field of view.

I know it sounds obvious, but to someone who's not used to video the hand-clap seemed like a mysterious bit of wizardry or mummery. Once I explained, he got it instantly and did a "d'oh!" / facepalm combo.

I've actually did it without the clapping, but that is a good trick. I have a pretty slammin web cam that does HD vid. It also has a built in mic. What I do is, record the cam with the cam mic enabled and record the audio in Sonar at the same time. From there, when I'm done, I import the vid and the audio from the cam into Sonar with the audio I recorded in Sonar, and just slide the Sonar audio until it's in sync with the cam feed audio. Once that's done, I delete the cam audio and I'm golden. I do the same thing when using a conventional video camera. Always record the crappy sound from the cam as a sync track. :)

Thanks to all !

I had a play about with this today and actually used a single hit on the kick drum at the start of the session to line up the rest and like Danny said I lined up the audio from the camera from there and it worked like a treat ! I think if I was doing it with guitar or bass I would be using the hand clap method.
