A Little Trouble with the Guitar Rig Upgrade
Went to NI and purchased the upgrade for Guitar Rig 4. It installed with no trouble. I opened it in stand-alone ,ode and went to Service Center. It said all my products were activated. Now, when I try to add GR 4 to a track in Sonar X1, all I get is the same LE version I had before , although the full-version is there in stand-alone mode. Any ideas how to clean this up and get the full GR 4 working right as a plug-in? Thanks. PS I chose to install Basic + VST. I did not install RTAS or the hardware drivers since I do not have the HW.

I don't know the answer but I have seen something similar with Rapture vs Rapture LE. When you insert soft synth or audio FX, check through the entire menu. There could be two entries for it. One being LE and the other being the full version. In my case with Rapture, one is Rapture LE and then there are two other entries for two different versions i have installed.

Thanks, maximum, but no luck. When I click in the FX Bin to add an effect, I see Guitar 4 but not multiple entries. In the plug-in manager, I see the 32 and 64 bit versions from before, but no upgrade. My guess is that the *.dll is messed up—that is that the wrong one is in place, or the right one is misplaced, but not sure how to remedy that, if indeed that's the issue.

I upgraded the GR4 LE to the Pro version last week with no issues. Why not simply uninstall GR, delete any registry items that may get left behind and re-install? Just double check your plugins folder(s) to make sure everything was deleted. If you saved any custom presets I would save a copy of them elsewhere before uninstalling just in case. After that open Sonar, open the plugin manager and check for any left over GR entries on the far right column. If you have multiple layouts check them all. That's my dos centavos.

Install the upgrade - delete the LE version - rescan in plugin manager. I installed GR4Pro version and had no problems. Alan

This may sound dumb, but to ensure I don't totally hose things: In Windows programs, I only one instance of GR3 and one of GR4. Not sure how I will know I am uninstalling LE v full version. Erasing off the hard disk is not usually a good way to uninstall programs. How would I do the registry clean-up referenced above? Thanks.

Check out a free program called CCleaner or do a google search for free registry cleaners. Eusing Registry Cleaner is another one. I have both these on my computer and they both do a decent job. Alan

Thanks guys. I will work with this. By the way, the forum advice was to go with GR instead of Amplitube, and even based on my experience with GR LE, that was solid guidance. RealStrat (MusicLab) run through GR sounds fantastic.

RealStrat (MusicLab) run through GR sounds fantastic. GR4? I am new to digital recording. Just got Sonar in April and just am starting to play with GR 4 and Amplitube. What made you go with GR4? I want to go with GR4 since I can upgrade this month for $49.99. But I am curious if you used both and why you picked GR4? --- I know this wasn't the posted topic but now that you brought it up... I am curious :-) P.S. I hope you get your problem with the install sorted quickly.

Update: Standalone version is NOT OK: just gives me the same presets and amps as LE. At first, I jumped to the conclusion it was OK because I had never seen the standalone version until after the upgrade. So, basically I paid for and installed the full PRO version but only have LE.

konradh, I found this searching around... OK so I've just done the same but bought GR4Pro through cakewalk but what you must do is. Install LE with X1. Register LE with the serial Cakewalk give you for LE with X1 Download and install the 4.1.1 update Convert to Full Demo mode from the help menu Activate using the new serial for GR4Pro full version Not sure if it will help but maybe it is worth a try. Good luck!

Thanks, Maximum. Will check it out. In answer to your question, here's why I went with GFR instead of Amplitube (although if I can't get it working, I may change my opinion). 1-$50 upgrade v. full price for Amplitube was hard to resist. 2-Initial results with LE version of GR were good. 3-Several engineers I trust recommended GR over Amplitube, saying that it offers more sound design options and also that Amplitube tends to have too much bottom end (though that could be rolled off, of course). I think you would be happy with either one. My needs are simple and Pod v2 always worked for me when I was coming in with an external signal. It is a pain when using virtual instruments, though.

I upgraded to 4 full also. I had to register 4 LE first, then get the serial number for full and activate.

Weird thing is that NI Service Center says all my products are activated. I'm wondering if there is some kind of dll conflict.

konradh Weird thing is that NI Service Center says all my products are activated. I'm wondering if there is some kind of dll conflict. The NI site also told me all of my products were activated. It made no difference. I still had to register and activate LE and then get the SN for Pro and then go to the NI site and register and activate PRO. Once you have the activation file you can upgrade LE to PRO. I really don't think you have a dll issue. I think it's the confusing way NI does it's registration and activations.

I had similar issues with other plugins. Here's what I'd do. Remove the old version of GR. Search in the windows registry for the name of the guitar rig dll file. It's probably guitarrig3.dll or something like that. I don't have my box available to check atm. Nuke all instances that the old dll is referenced. Rescan all plugins. It should work. I recently had an issue with dimension where the 32 bit 1.2 version would override the 1.5 64bit version. I had to completely uninstall all versions, clean out the registry and then reinstall. It fixed it. This is pretty much the same thing you're experiencing.

Thanks. I will give this a shot. NI is not responding to my support ticket and no one is answering on the NI Guitar Rig forum. Sweetwater sent me a suggestion, but, unfortunately, it did not work. I am getting frustrated as I have bought several products recently that are not working and for which i am receving no support (except, of course, for the awesome users of this Sonar forum).

I will now publicly declare that I am sorry I bought Guitar Rig. The $50 upgrade sounded good, but not if you get nothing but wasted time in return. I should have bought and will buy Amplitube. NI is no help and is not responding. I tried to follow the advice on this forum of registering the product, but Support Center insists everything is registered and activated. I can find no place to to activate this product. Although the people here have been kind enough to offer technical suggestions, it is absurd that I should have to do a bunch of complex PC analysis and tweaking to use a product I bought. If I don't see something pretty soon to change my mind about NI, it is off my list as a supplier.

Completely uninstall LE so there is nothing for it to point to. You can always reinstall it later, but I really don't think you're going to run into a problem where you can't get it back. I'd seriously uninstall all of instances of guitar rig and start over. I know it sucks. =(. I can't speak for amplitube. The last version I used was v1 and it was pretty crappy. GR4 is fantastic (once you get past all this crap). I do feel for you though. I hate problems like this. All you want to do is write and record music, not fight with technology all day.

I happened to be on line with the Sweetwater tech on another issue and he got it working. The issue was indeed that it had to be upgraded/registered. The odd thing is that Service Center said all my products were activated. The secret key was to go to the Overview tab, the pick LE, and then enter the full version demo. Not sure how someone would know to do that, or why that is not in the confirmation email after purchase--but it works now Thanks for all the kind advice, everyone. I hope this helps someone else. By the way, I am cursed by a poltergeist. The day Guitar Rig started working, the engine in my Kurzweil rack unit died AND my Yamaha synth started lagging behind on tracks so I have to adjust it by a 32nd note on everything. All the tracks that have Kurzweil parts will have to be rearranged unless I can find a used unit at a reasonable price. (It is a PC2R with orchestral expansion.)
