USB Interfaces on Windows7 46bit with no problems...???
Hi, after 3 years working with Sonar (Studio 7, Producer 8.5 to X1b) without any major issues exept not enough Ram using plugins like Superior Drummer, Guitar Rig, Kontakt ect... , I recently upgraded from Windows XP 32bit to Windows 7 64bit, having X1b 64 installed (including patch a and quick fix) on a brandnew Maschine. Here are my specs: Mainbord: MSI P67A-C43, Processor: Intel Core i7-2600 CPU 3.40 GHz, 8 Gig Ram, Cooler Master Silent Pro 600W PSU, Windows 7 Home Premium 64, Interfaces: Edirol UA 25ex, Line 6 UX 2, NI Guitar Rig Mobile I/O (all up to date drivers installed) Now, I'm not shure if this is a Windows 7 issue (I've never had this problem with XP) but at random and out of the blue all USB interfaces stop working, so do USB mouse and keybord. Basicly everything freezes. The only posibillity is to restart the computer manually with the powerbutton. (After re-opening Sonar, in all the audio clips the transients are gone) Could this be a bug in Windows 7 USB controllers? All you poeple, using USB Interfaces on Windows 7 46 bit with no problems... where am I going wrong...and is there a fix? Thanx in advance for reply! Daniel

I had some problems with my M-Audio Fast Track Ultra, ends up it had something to do with the power saving scheme in Windows. Once I told it to not put USB on standby (or anything else for that matter) the crashes went away. : ) Hope thats helpful. Brian

You can exempt your USB ports from being put to sleep as a power-saving measure. Open Device Manager, go to the properties page for each USB hub. You may have several. On the Power Management tab, uncheck the option labeled something like "allow this device to be turned off to save power". Then go to the Power Options applet in Control Panel and define a power profile for DAW use. Just disable every option that has to do with turning devices off or going into standby.
All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to. My Stuff

Thanx for your reply, bitflipper and Stonhouse Studios !!! : ) I looked at the USB hub options "allow this device to be turned off to save power" and they where already unchecked. Before I posted to this Forum I've already had the power saving options set according to the NI knlowledgebase : Windows+7+Tuning+Tips+for+audio+processing, which says more or less exatly what you advised. I found a scary suggestionon on "Windows Answers" : " It might be that the USB drivers would have gone corrupt. I would suggest you to uninstall the drivers from the device manager and let windows reinstall it when the system starts up.." Urrghhh. I didn't open Sonar yet today (damn, its already 10:00 AM here in Amsterdam and I havn't touched my guitar yet) so anyway I will go on now and see what the day brings. Nice Forum this is by the way! I hope I can contribute something helpful to someone at some point. Have a great day!!!

Checked all the settings for optimized DAW use again (power options ect). After about 1 hour working in X1 (just some audioediting on my testproject) everething freeezes. Only a hard reset possible. Instead of recording some brilliant guitar takes, I spent the last 2 hours looking for information how to solve this problem. I even looked into the Microsoft "Answers" website. They seem to be quite some issues with exactly the same symptoms AFTER installing SP 1. My system Information says Wndows 7 Home Premium... I guess I need to consult some IT specialist.

Studiocat.com does consulting at 40 USD per half hour. Perhaps youcould use Skype to make a cheap call... then you will be talking with someone who is DAW specific and will likely be able to pinpoint yur problem quickly... I think. Julien

Its not a Windows 7 problem. I use lots of USB devices and never have a problem with them. Sounds like a computer hardware problem. Is it still under warranty? You need to run some diagnostics or have it looked at professionally.

...a hardware issue. That's what I was alsmost "hoping" for. I thought I followed all installation and setting procedures correctly. The machine is brandnew and all hardware parts are still under warranty , so I'm gonna bring it to the dude from the computershop who assambled the thing. In the meantime I continue with my projets on my little brave XP 32bit - 3Gig Ram - AMD Quadcore- machine. Thank you all for taking my matter seriously! Kind Regards - Cheers! Daniel

Would running it through a powered USB hub help? Just a thought. Generally you want your audio IO on it's own USB bridge, but maybe if you used a powered hub with nothing else in it, it would help.

If all USB devices lock up, it sounds like the controllers on your main board. In device manager, you'll see a list of host controllers. If you click on each one and look at the driver tab, you'll probably see they all use the same driver. If you uninstall this driver and restart, W7 will just install whatever driver version is resident in the OS. This will take about 1 minute, but may or may not fix your problem. If you got a utilities disk with the PC, it may have a driver on it that could be the same or a different version. If you still have the problem, you might want to get a tech locally to help. It really should be an easy fix. If you have limited technical knowledge and and attempt further repair through Microsoft knowledgebase or tech support, it could take much longer, and you could create additional problems for yourself. Best of luck to you.
