Almost there - I armed the track with Analog 3-4 but got no result.  I then changed the Return assign to be the same as the Main Out assign and then ... it did show levels, and record (!) ---- but, the recorded audio was not clear - some flamming, or was it feedback  ... hmmm. So nearly there ... 

HP Z420, Intel Xeon E5-1620@ 3600MHz, 8GB RAM,  Windows 7 Pro 64-bit, Soundcard : Focusrite Saffire 24, & Sonar : Producer X3

If your getting a weird sound then you have not set your in's and out's correctly still. You most likely getting a loop, your system latency will add in a delay etc.

The Synth  output to Motu 3/4-  DO NOT send 3/4 to master buss.
If using cables patch output 3/4 back to input 1/2.
If internal , well,  read your manual. I don't have that option so cannot explain.
Arm new track and use input 1/2 as source. Turn off output echo.
You must be careful with the routing that you don't create a loop.
