Superior Drummer memory issues - ram usage doubling
Gents, I already have a ticket in with Toontrack support, but I figured I’d try here as well. I’ve recently installed Superior Drummer 2.0, updated to 2.2.3. It sounds fantastic, but I’m running into some serious memory management issues. The software defaults to 1200mb as a memory limit threshold, which seems odd since the default kit alone seems to need around 1600mb. I raise the memory limit to 2000 mb (my system has 4 gigs in all), and the kits load just fine. However, I run into trouble when I go back later to open an existing Sonar project that already has a track for Superior Drummer. If I open that instance of SD to make changes, it starts to load samples again, seemingly ON TOP of those it has already loaded. So if the kit was taking up 1600mb when the project was saved, if I try to open SD and make changes to the kit from that project it eats up a whopping 3200mb of ram total! If I have to open it again later? Crash! This happens after rebooting as well, so I don’t think it’s an issue of some rouge Sonar process not closing all the way. I’m pretty lost. I don’t experience this behavior with any other sample-based software. Thoughts? Suggestions?

The OP never came back to follow up - bad online etiquette. Presumably, Toontrack fixed him up. Maybe you can describe your problem, rectifryer, and we'll start over.

There is an issue, where, when closing out a track folder with a soft synth such as Superior Drummer 2, that the plugin itself isnt closed. Infact, it is opened AGAIN everytime you "close" it then reopen as needed. This leads to the ram getting hogged by the additional instances of said synth. I figured out that I need to open the synth rack to actually close them. I felt pretty dumb. Took me all week to figure this out. I dont personally think that is very intuitive, but I am used to it now. I am just glad there was no real issue!

When you say "closing out a track folder", do you mean muting, hiding, archiving, freezing or deleting? Since I run XP32, I'm necessarily all about resource conservation!

I would delete the track folder holding the Superior Drummer 2 Soft Synth yet that instance of the plugin would remain open in the synth rack. I can duplicate the issue, so I think that is how Roland intended it to be? Either way, its good to go! With the largest kit on Superior Drummer Metal Foundry, at 24 bit with all the bleeds, I only use about 1.5 gigs of ram. Its not as hefty now that ram is 100$ for 8-16 gigs.

OK, I understand. And yes, it's true that simply adding a sampler via the synth rack causes it to load, and to automatically reload any library when you open the project, regardless of whether it's routed to any tracks. The soft synth itself simply does not know whether it's linked to any MIDI inputs or audio outputs until playback time. BTW, there are steps you can take to greatly reduce RAM consumption by Superior Drummer. The easiest thing is to switch to 16-bit samples. You always have the option of switching back to 24-bit samples prior to exporting, but I usually stick with 16 bits all the way through. When you're done with your drum programming, you can further reduce RAM by using the Cache option, which flushes all unused samples from memory. Finally, reducing bleeds also saves RAM. Do you really need to feed the kick drum into the overheads? Sometimes, but not always. And of course the ultimate RAM-saving measure is to freeze the synth, which unloads it from memory.
