Sonar X1 mute/unmute toggle MIDI routing?

I am pretty used to groovebox style songwriting meaning to build up a song by muting/unmuting loops before recording and arranging the whole thing.
I used the Roland Grooveboxes a lot and I was wondering if maybe Sonar can do something similar.
Something like routing the mute/unmute toggles for each track to a specific MIDI note so I can switch them on and off by the press of a button on any hardware controller.
I am fine with the workflow Sonar is pushing and I know there is a matrix view (which doesn't really work the way I want it to and it can't send data to external gear so it is pretty useless anyway) but the ability to "groovebox" Sonar would be incredibly useful.
Maybe I can do this but I just haven't found how?

The keyboard shortcut 'K' mutes/ un-mutes a clip. You can also MIDI learn track mutes to a MIDI button/ pad. And you can record those mutes/ un-mutes when the Mute button is in Automatable mode (right-click on it to switch mute modes, then arm for automation).

Is that what you're going for?
