SD3 again...
I'm having nothing but problems with SD3. I have songs that I have already recorded, and I want to replace the drums. Not only am I having problems figuring out how to replace the drums, but things aren't working correctly in SD3. On the Mixer page of SD3 it allows you to route the different parts of drums to separate tracks: 1,2,3,4, etc. I tried that, but the only one that works for me is 1. After I tried routing the snare, toms, etc, to other tracks, then my coltroller stopped working. I had to go out of Sonar and re-enter and re-insert SD3 for my controller to work again. But it only works on 1. Maybe I'm going about this wrong, but I record the different parts of drums on separate tracks. When SD3 is open and I insert another MIDI track and record, like a snare or something, in playback the volume meter moves, but there's no sound. The only time I hear sound is when I record ONLY in the SD3 track when I open it. If I add another track, I can't hear that track in playback. I'm just not getting it. Greg

When you create SD3, did you check All Synth Audio Output Stereo and Midi source? This will automatically create tracks for you to route your drum heads to

For each new midi track you add you need to send the output to SD3. Look in the output options in the track inspector.

No need to feel like an idiot--this is not obvious. For others new to this, note that when SD3 says "Track 1" it means the first SD3 audio track it created: not real track 1. This can be confusing.

On the Mixer page of SD3 it allows you to route the different parts of drums to separate tracks: 1,2,3,4, etc. I tried that, but the only one that works for me is 1. Those aren't "tracks"; they're audio outputs, and you need an audio track with it's input set to that output of SD3 for each output you want to use. You can have all your drum parts on one MIDI track if you like (many prefer this), but if you want independent control of the audio stream from each kit piece in order to be able to selectively mix and apply effects independently in SONAR, you need one track for each output. If you insert SD3 with the All Outputs option as suggested, it will create all those audio tracks for you, but you still have to decide how many MIDI track you want to use, and set those up yourself (with their outputs all pointing to SD3) if you want more than one. Hope that clears things up a bit.

Try these steps Create SD3 with the Midi source and All audio output stereo options checked. This will create all the tracks for you to route your out from your SD3 Mixer view. Route your drum heads to the tracks already created by SD3 by changing the output numbers in the mixers view in SD3 See if that works

In addition to what Brundlefly posted, most drum controllers send on channel 10 with a note # for each drum peice. If you are going to create a seperate Midi track for each drum peice ( highly advisable if you want to Midi edit ) you should route the inputs to channel 10 of your controller and specify which instrument peice it is by entering the note number and patch in each track.

OK, when I open SD3 and click on All Synth Audio Output Stero, my controller doesn't work. But if I click on Simple Instrument Track, then my controller does work. And my controller finally works when I open a new MIDI track and click on SD3 in the Output. I'm able to use my controller with all the different drum parts in different MIDI tracks. So I'm part way there. (And at this point I'll take whatever progress I can get.) I'm going over everyone's comments and trying to figure them out. It's very much appreciated! Thanks!! I still need to understand editing drums parts - especially in the Step Sequencer. I know I can't do that the way I'm recording now. One day this will all sink in . . . I keep telling myself.

It sounds like you're just having trouble setting up the tracks-inputs/outputs correctly. It's time to define what controller you are using, what channel or channels it sends on.

I'm using an old Yamaha PSR550 keyboard. The manual is a bit confusing. I believe it's set up to send on channel 1.
