New to X1 Pro, not able to get ZED-R16 to work properly!! Please help!!
Hi, I am very new to Sonar, I have been using Reaper for a fair amount of time and felt that it was time to upgrade. Im using the A&H ZED R16 as my interface (I have the drivers downloaded and it works flawlessly with Reaper). When I go into Preferences/Devices it only allows me to choose from "Allen and Heath Firewire Audio 1/2", "Allen and Heath Firewire Audio 3/4", "Allen and Heath Firewire Audio 5/6", and "Allen and Heath Firewire Audio7/8" plus "HD Audio Digital in [Wave RT]" It is not allowing me to access my ASIO to run all 16 mono channels like I wish to do. I got Sonar to help my business run more smoothly and so far all it has done is cost me and arm and a leg. I have played with it for several nights trying everything I can think of. Im out of ideas and frustrated. I have heard great things about Sonar and just hope I am able to experience them as well. Thank you guys in advance for your help it will be greatly appreciated. -Bill

And also I have a very well recognized local band coming into the studio on Wednesday and would prefer to run Sonar over Reaper with them. Makes me look more professional and will hopefully yield better results for the band and get me noticed more by having a great quality sound on such a popular band. And thanks again.

In Preferences, it is likely to show your drivers in stereo pairs. When you are in track view, you should be able to choose 1, 2, or stereo 1 & 2 as inputs and outputs. Have a look. Brian Edit: You'll look worse if you don't know your tools. Maybe you should hold off on the switch until you've spent more time with Sonar.

Yes I can do that, but to track drums I need 10 channels and it does not allow me to do that. I was talking to a guy I know with a next to identical set up and he said his lets him select "ASIO" in preferences and he has access to all 16. He was not much help other then telling me that though. And yea I suppose your right on that. I probably will hold off now. I spent a little time on LE but not enough to where I know right where everything I need is. Im much more familiar with Reaper.

Yeah, it's not a good time to try something new with a band you want to impress. Work out the kinks with the less important people ;)

Bill, Let me try to help. I have been using the ZED-R16 with Sonar for a little while and love it. As the others said, now might not be the best time to make such a drastic change but let me see if I can help. In the Sonar "Preferences" menu under "Audio"/"Devices" you should see a list of Input Drivers and Output Drivers that reads "ASIO Allen & Heath Firewire ZED R16 CH1/CH1/2" thru "ASIO Allen & Heath Firewire ZED R16 CH15/CH15/16" then "ASIO Allen & Heath Firewire ZED R16 L/ MAIN L/R" and then your ADAT options thru 7/8. This is if you are connected using the firewire output and the ASIO drivers. Make sure ASIO is selected on the Audio/Playback and Recording menu. I usually only select the "ASIO Allen & Heath Firewire ZED R16 L/ MAIN L/R" for input and output in normal use. When tracking multiple channels in a recording session, I will select all of the firewire inputs, not the ADAT as I don't use that ever. I also never select all channel output drivers as I never bring multi channels back to the ZED. Make sure you have the latest firmware/drivers. I think it is 3.5.5. You might want to go into your Windows "Device Manager" and disable your "HD Audio Digital in [Wave RT]". I use my ZED as my only sound card. Everything passes through it. I hope this can get you started. On my ZED, I always leave my main L/R at 0 (unitiy gain) and "Dig Master to L-R" selected.

Hi there. Just to add that I also use the ZED-R16 with Sonar and it works great. It looks to me like BretB has most of it covered. I think what you will find is that you currently have Sonar in WDM mode and not ASIO. I get exactly the same driver listing you've described if I try to switch to WDM. To fix it go to preferences->Audio->Playback & Recording and make sure the "Driver Mode" is ASIO. The good news is once you get it going the ZED works a dream with Sonar. I do occasionaly use all of the outs and my headphone mixes are assigned to channels 6 & 7. You can even send tracks out to the ZED on a channel use that lovely ZED EQ, external effects etc and re-record it back on the same track in Sonar as a fresh layer. Superb.

I have the ZED-R16 working fine with X1. I use ASIO and can access all of the ZED-R16 I/O. I couldn't get it working with WDM either, so I don't think you are doing anything wrong. To the other ZED-R16 owners, what latency settings are you able to use?

I got it working!!! Thanks guys!! It was in WMD mode and not ASIO. I feel so stupid I looked all over for how to switch to ASIO I must have been on that tab 15 times last night haha. But its all figured out now and Im starting to play around. So far I love it. Kicks the crap out of Reaper. Thanks again guys.

And I am also curious about latency, I really dont understand a whole lot about it. I have always just went with the reccommended settings.

Latency using an outboard mixer is almost irrelevant. It's only going to affect you if you input monitor and why would you want to do that with an outboard mixer. It rather defeats the point of the mixer. Mine is set way high at over 1000 samples simply because to me it doesn't matter. I appreciate that others have different work flows and methods but chances are if you aren't noticing it it's also a non-issue for you. I can if I wish run at 256 samples on smaller projects and 512 on larger ones before I start getting problems but it's an individual thing that is governed by your firewire interface, computer specs and a hundred other factors. Simple answer is don't worry about it if it isn't bothering you.

It's true that an outboard mixer solves quite a few latency issues, as you can monitor most things with effectively zero latency. There are times though, when it's useful to use Sonar's input monitoring, depending on the particular effects you might want to monitor. For example, sometimes I will record a clean electric guitar straight into Sonar, and monitor Guitar Rig in real time. It just gives so many more options to record the clean signal, but unless you have input monitoring you can't play the part correctly. A work around would be to use a guitar amp for monitoring, but split off the clean signal for recording. None of this is an issue if you know exactly what guitar sound you are after, but I find this can change during the life of a project, as you search for "that sound".
Latency also remains an issue for softsynths. Sometimes if I can't get it low enough on a particular project I will use a hardware synth to monitor the playing, but this doesn't always have the same response to velocity etc, so not always ideal. I usually run at 512 samples which is around 11.6 msec reported latency, and unless I want to use input monitoring I will often set the ZED R-16 to safe mode level 1 to ensure I don't get any dropouts. That is not normally really necessary, as I can generally run it in normal mode, but it can drop out occasionally in normal mode. I can reduce buffer size to 256 on small projects. My specs are a bit old really. I am running a Q6600 CPU (2.4GHz) on an ASUS P5B MB with 4 GB RAM (and Vista 32 OS). I use the PC for everything (wireless internet etc), so there are a bunch of processes running on it that I could ditch if I really wanted to streamline it. (78 processes if I run task monitor - no wonder I opt for safe mode level 1 on the ZED R-16).
