Windows Defender
My new computer is approaching 6 months old and the half-year included Kaspersky subscription is just about up. Do I really need another virus scanner, since Defender is also installed? This isn't the DAW box.

Hi Greg, I've used some of the more popular freeware's (AVG, Avast etc...) and found Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) to be very effective and least intrusive. AFAIK, MSE is an antivirus and does everything that Windows Defender does + a whole lot more. Easy to install (& uninstall if needed)......and is FREE!! :) You can check the comparrisons here.

a big +1 to MS Security Essentials. I've used AVG and Avast before as well, but MSE is just as Mesh said - very effective and least intrusive.

Another +1 for MSE. When I traveled on business a lot, I used ESET's Smart Security suite with no complaints (or missed viruses/intrusions). When I came to my current church a couple years ago, my traveling went to nil (not a bad thing), and I decided to try one of the freebies when my ESET subscription ran out. MSE had well-spoken of by one of the tech reviewers so I gave it a try. So far, so good - performs well and hasn't let anything through.

Greg, I use Microsoft Security Essentials AND Malware bytes. Both are free. I use caution with Windows defender, since there is a malware program that has a very similar name and appearance.
