once you log in, can you change the settings, and do they work OK?
It's a Dell.... so, did you upgrade the OS or anything important?
Reason I ask that is because I have a Dell laptop that cam with Windows ME on it. One of the software packages I use in business had an upgrade that required a minimum OS of XP. So I bought and installed the XP upgrade.
Every time I booted I had a black screen. A call to tech (Dell support) and they asked me to tap F8 during boot up. I can log in with VGA mode and then change to the higher resolution for working on the computer. The problem is that it will NOT save nor will it boot to the higher res screen.
I was told by the Dell techs that this was an unsolvable issue and I needed to use the workaround every time I boot up....which I have done for 2 years now on that lappy when I need to use it.
Maybe it's something like that happening.
I would look in the computer's CONTROL PANEL, at the video/monitor settings and see if you can make the changes there and save them. If the monitor came with a driver disk, be sure you loaded the driver that is specific to the monitor. That might be the problem..... wrong or generic driver and the monitor/computer is looking for it's driver, doesn't find it and reverts to lowest resolution by default.
Check with the mfg too, call them and have a chat with the techs.
It does kinda sound like a driver issue. I was told that was the problem in the lappy, and no driver exists to solve the issue the correct way...so I use the workaround which does work. It just takes a minute more.
