Sonar X1 Producer edition loading time - is it normal?

Hello,

I have just installed sonar Producer edition on my windows PRO 64 bit machine, I have applied all the necessary patches.

I have 2 questions for you:

1)Is it normal that when you start the software, it seems like getting stuck for 5 seconds and then goes on as normal? I am just worrying about the loading time.

2)Do you think there are enough compressors and effects to mix a song properly or do I have to buy more of them? I would have believe that we have enough but I could be wrong.

3)When you do a final mix for a client, do you mix everything into Sonar X1 and export as is, or mix it, export it as 1 single wav and then re import and finally re add a new effect, equalizer or Eq? What is the best way?

4)I have heard it was better to mix in 96khz and then export it down to 44.1 KHZ, what do you think?

Thank you,

Ben

If you have a lot of plugins/vst installed it will take some time to load IIRC you can disable the vst loading in the start. Sonar provides you with good compressors and eq from sonituus, of course there are others. You can add eq to the master bus.

    Ben,

Depends on what you need. Can you mix a song with what they give you? Hell yeah. Will it be exactly what you want? Maybe. I *could* use the Sonitus and prochannel compressors, I even like them a lot, but I still use Waves Renn Comp on vocals because it sounds so wonderful and I'm use to it.

    Dear Friends,

Thank you very much for your kind replies.
I did disable the plugin load at the start but the 5 seconds start up is still happening, I have noticed that Dimension pro 64 completely crashes Sonar X1 on my machine, I did update both softwares to their latest release.

I kind of astonished by the software to be honest, tonight I did a test on it, added 12 East West RA modules and triggered everything to a single note, the 64 bit engines only used 3% of the total power of my machine, while on project 5(32 bit) I would have used 60% of a single processor.

I really like the interface, what a change from sonar 7, I did have Sonar 7  for a long time but never bothered using it because I did not like the way the software was built, but X1 rocks!

I now know what you mean about good Eqs Josh, I only noticed that on the producer edition, each track has it's own EQs built it, this is excellent and their are pretty  good as well.

In overall, I am extremely happy about this product,I will receive 700Gigs of sounds tomorrow, I will be able to test is fully using a huge amount of simultaneous tracks.

    Thank again for your help,

    Ben

I was using the waves EQ, but I find myself just using prochannel now. I don't know what the prochannel does, but it sounds really nice. I just wish it showed what frequency points you are at without having to wait for the mouse over. I associate different types of sound by it's frequency number, not the graphic plot.

    But that's a minor beef.

If the 64bit plugs didn't have massive dropouts when adjusting them (like the 64 bit multiband), I'd love them, but I can't use them because of that.

The mastering channel would probably be nice, but I'm currently using Ozone4 and it whoops. So I have no need to use it. The thing I like about external plugs is that I can use the same thing on any DAW. I plan on getting protools for industry compatibility at some point and I can still use my Waves renn comp and Ozone :).

If I could use prochannel in protools, that'd be awesome.

I'm with you on that.  X1 is the first version of sonar I've really taken too.  Sonar ships with a good amount of plugs.  There are also some good free stuff out there too add to the mix.  Check kvraudio.com.  lately I have aaso been digging the stillwell plugs which have an unrestricted demo.  the bombardier and rocket are great comps and i like evet horizon for limiting.

Your post gave me a chuckle, Ben. "I have 2 questions..." No doubt you have a lot more than 4 questions, I think.

    1. It's probably the vst scan that you're waiting on. This can and should be disabled (it's under File -> VST Settings in X1; uncheck the "scan for vst plugins on startup" option).

    2. Yes, there are enough compressors and effects to do a professional-grade mix. But it's like asking if you have enough shoes in your closet. You can always justify adding to your collection. Just don't keep buying plugins because the ones you have don't seem to be working for you - that's a trap.

    3. I do everything inside the SONAR project, including mastering. It's just tidier that way. The exception is when I'm assembling an album for CD, in which case I use a separate project and do my brickwall limiting and wordlength reduction there.

    4. The 96 vs 44 vs 48 debate is fodder for flame wars. Best not to get started lest your thread be quickly derailed. The short version of my own advice is to invest in a quality audio interface and stick with 44.1.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.
