EQing and compression for vocals in sonar 8.5.3

Looking for advice on EQ and compression on vocals. This thread is similar to my last post on EQing for instruments. I'm looking for a good Hz starting range to work with. Get a good dynamic range where to vocals for a hiphop track to sound full and have a surround sound type deal. I use plugins for effects time to time. Sometimes I just want the artists normal voice, but make it grab the listener with a good EQ and compression punch. Something like an artist you hear on the radio and cd. I know radio adds extra compression, but just want to get some good advice from sonar users to help me find the vocal sound I'm looking for. I like to use eq's that are added with sonar and Mercury Waves as well. I have a few tracks at www.myspace.com/mistamacctrax for listening too. These are just mixdown with no mastering. Vocals and tracks are not complete, but something to get out in the open until we are fully ready with the upcoming album. Explicit lyrics in these hiphop tracks. Cotton mouth is an original track of mine. It's not fully complete as I got more work to do. All advice and criticism is welcome to help guide me with what I am still learning. Thanks.

    I'll bite.  Roll off the low end w/ a high-pass filter.  80-100 Hz is a nice starting place, tho for female vocals it can be double or more of that.

    Otherwise, it is probably best to look to cut other instruments' frequency that step on the main one's of the vocals.

    For compression, start w/ the Sonitus comp on the 1176 preset if you want the vox to float on top of the music.  Then jack w/ the input, release etc. until it sound right to you.  It is just not the fact that vocals need different settings - it is also about how you hear them.  Art not science.

      Thanks. I will run the hi pass filter with the settings you gave as a nice starting point. I will also check out the Sonitus 1176 setting. Overall, I will play around again, but it's nice to have a starting point to go from. Thank you again.

    I think that the setttings your asking for will vary greatly depending on what your doing and how it sounds. There is no magical set of settings. 

    That said, I can personally recommend the iZotope Nectar plugin. It's powerful and really easy to use on vox.
