Intrument assignment puzzle

Hi Guys..

It's been a month since I last used HS6XL and a strange event has occurred with the Instrument assignment to the output ports of my Midiman.

I use a Midiman 8 x8 with HS 6 and for some reason I seem to have "lost" the instrument assigment/output channel/midi plan.

No big deal but a pain to have to map it all in again. But now I notice the Midiman output assignments list appear in the order O/P 1,3,5,7,2,4,6,8 whereas they were previously logically 1,2,3,4,5,6,7, 8

As I was in a hurry to re-assign the instruments, I missed that and set up the midi channels of a bunch of outboard boxes on port 3 - thinking it was port 2 as it was previous setting. Cost me a lot of wasted time before finding this out!!

Anyone know how this happened and how to get the O/P's back into the chronological ascending order which I would prefer!

intersting problem. have you updated drivers for the midiman recently?  or sometime since you last used SHS?

    Hi Beagle..

I did have a spurious problem with the Midiman 8 x 8 hardware about three months back, but I didn't update any drivers. After shutting the whole system down ( pc included) disconnecting the USB and re-connecting and powering up the whole lot, it seemed to sort it out.

One thing I did notice yesterday, the activity LED on input 1 on the midiman - which is my CME UF7 controller keyboard running through HS6 - is constantly flashing as if there is midi data flowing, when there isn't. If I power down the CME it stops flashing. Haven't seen that before and doesn't seem to affect the operation of HS6. Still weird though!

    Any thoughts?

If I were you, I'd connect the CME to a different port and see if that still happens, then connect a differet MIDI controller if possible if that still happens.  process of elimination.

Hi beagle...well the mystery deepens! HS6 opens OK but won't load any files. I can open a NEW one and all's well, so I'm guessing that HS6 has got itself corrupted somehow so I'm about to re-install the loat. All files are backed up on a NAS so should be OK.

BTW the CME problem goes with the change of port from 1 to 2 and no problem with another controller on the CME port 1.

Maybe it's all linked hence the re-install.

    Thanks for your time

hi Mike - what do you mean when you say it won't open any files?  what happens exactly?  do you get an error message or does it just sit there and not do anything when you try to open one?  and are you opening from the menu options or are you double clicking on a project name?

from what you're describing about the CME problem, I would be concerned that the problem is with the CME, tho.  if the problem follows the CME and doesn't happen with a different controller, that points to the CME.

Tremor,  Some controllers send a Midi real time message (one byte long) called "Active Sensing".  I think it has fallen out of favor in newer controllers but that could be what the CME UF7 is sending.  You would see it as long as the controller is powered on.  Generally everything ignores it so it should not get recorded.

    Hi Guys...

Beagle... I was trying to open my existing midi files from the HS6> file> open menu. No error message, just no list of recent files showed up at all. Having re-installed HS6 all files have appeared again and HS 6 seems to operate correctly.

Larry...you're right! Using midi ox I can see a continual stream of "timing clock" data interspersed with "active sensing" data. The CME hasn't done that before (had it for 3 years now!) so need to check it's settings.

Interestingly, with the CME powered off, my other master keyboard (Technics) is also sending "active sensing" data.

Finally, I can confirm that none of this data gets recorded as Larry says.

The original problem of Instrument Listings out of order remains however - still showing up in the order of 1,3,5,7,2,4,6,8. Maybe I'll just have to live with that, but I don't like mysteries!

Thanks for your help guys - I'm always grateful

    Mike
