MIDI Envelopes

Sometimes X1 makes me feel like such a newbie!

Okay, a couple of questions:

1. How in heck do I select an entire envelope?  I seem to have no problem selecting individual nodes, but I can't seem to find any help files, Google searches or even Forum searches that can answer what seems to be an easy question! Selecting the entire track and then using the selection tool doesn't work - it automatically drops the "entire" selection and jumps to a node/segment selection the moment I click on the envelope. (What I'd like to do is select the entire envelope and move it up or down.)

2. I use Garritan Personal Orchestra and always have to create an envelope for the Mod Wheel - CC#1.  In some versions of Sonar (sometimes!) the drop down menu within the MIDI envelope window would actually have numbers visible to choose from. Sonar X1b does not have anything in the drop down window - but I can manually enter a number.  Not a big deal... but sometimes the number does not "stick".  I'm not entirely sure if this is a Garritan/Aria problem or a Cakewalk one because when I go back to the MIDI window it inevitably shows a "0" no matter what has been assigned previously!

Thanks in advance!

One thing to check would be in Preferences - Project - Midi is to uncheck the "Zero Controllers When Play Stops" box.  That may possibly be the source of the 0's showing up.

For moving an entire envelope up or down left click and hold well above the envelope where there is no data and you should be able to drag the entire envelope up or down.  The key here is to click away someplace so nothing is selected in the timeline, otherwise you get 2 nodes inserted that you will drag up and down, not the entire envelope.  If you hold down the SHIFT AND CTRL key you can drag horizontally instead.

Awesome! I can now move envelopes about! No more dents in my head from banging it on my desk! (I knew it had to be something simple, but somewhat obscure.)

As regards the CC# disappearing... I've got a feeling it has something to do with Garritan/Sonar working/not working together. (I tried your suggestion about the Zero Controllers - no joy.)

I've just created a new Sonar session and tried to assign a MIDI envelope value - and wow! There are actually things in the drop down menu.
Now... I've opened a version of GarritanGPO4/Aria and tried to assign a MIDI envelope - and the drop down menu is blank.

I even used the same MIDI track.

If I point a track at my SB XI-Fi synth (my Sound Blaster sound card), 1-Modulation shows up in the value window - with 2-Breath, 4-Foot Controller and a bunch more following in the drop down. (But not all possible values... hmmm....)

If I point a track at my Aria player - I get a 0 in the value window - and absolutely nothing when I drop it down.

I just tried pointing the MIDI track at an instance of Dimension Pro - 0 in the value window, nothing in the drop down.

Same results with z3ta+, too - 0 and nothing in the drop down. And Kontakt 4.1. And SI-String. 0 and nothing in the drop down box.

Oh well.  I've noticed this over the years - but I seem to remember having CC#1, CC#2, etc. in the drop down with some synth or another.  I guess I'll just have to live with it!

    Thanks for your help!

Garritan Libraries are my primary sound sources for projects, and the MIDI controller menu in the PRV has always come up blank.  I've always needed to type in what I want - which is no problem, because I always know exactly what controller I want to work with.  But this isn't new with X1, and I've seen it with some other soft synths also.  The menu with the standard controller assignments seems to only appear consistently with GM synths.

You really need a keyboard with a mod wheel so you can record your CC1 volume data - it comes out much more organic than any amount of drawing you can do.
