I've had AVIs work fine. However, it's worth understanding what AVI actually is.
First off, Sonar's video support is
not sophisticated. There are a lot of codecs that it won't handle at all, and then some more which it will import, but deal with in a very flaky way.
Now, the thing about AVI is, it's not a codec. It's basically a wrapper format, and video inside the wrapper could be encoded in any of a myriad ways. It really could be almost anything, these days.
Without a wider range of tools, you're a bit stuck, really. I also use Sony Vegas, which handles video very nicely (unsurprisingly, given that it's a video editor).
When doing sound to picture composition, I've got a template in Vegas I use. I load up the original video in Vegas, and the render it back out as an NTSC DV AVI. Sonar gets along with that just fine. I'm sure there are other formats that work too, but that's always worked for me.
As has often been said, a bit of an update to video handling in Sonar would be a massive plus for a lot of people. Not even advanced features, necessarily, just a bit of improvement on this kind of stuff would be great.
