Welcome to the forum!
Windows version has got nothing to with producing MIDI-sounds.
As you might know, MIDI is not sound, so your questions can't be answered without knowing what you use to produce sound for your MIDI-tracks, as Chappel already pointed out..
What software version are you using, is it 8 LE, Studio or PE? If either of the latter ones, you have good drum sounds in soft synths like TTS-1. Have you done the tutorial about using soft synths?
As Chappel suggests, a proper soundcard is good to have if you want to use soft synth in an effective way without disturbuing latency.
SONAR PE 8.5.3, Asus P5B, 2,4 Ghz Dual Core, 4 Gb RAM, GF 7300, EMU 1820, Bluetube Pre - Kontakt4, Ozone, Addictive Drums, PSP Mixpack2, Melda Creative Pack, Melodyne Plugin etc.
The benefit of being a middle aged amateur is the low number of years of frustration ahead of you.
