It seems all distortion guitar sounds are the same. Syn suggestions?

I'm talking about a sound source such as Cakewalk TTS-1.

Try running your synth through an amp sim. I do this a lot. TTS-1 alone is somewhat limited. Case in point. http://soundclick.com/share.cfm?id=6913509 This is actually a fairly clean organ sound from ProteusVX, with FreeAmp2 in the FX bin, played with a controller and generous use of the pitch bend wheel. Try different things, and don't be afraid to mix and match. You have incredible flexibility at your disposal. FreeAmp 2 is no longer available, but I have been reading good things about Acmebargig, and plan to try it out soon.

If you want reasonably convincing guitar sounds without playing a guitar I'd recommend a guitar-emulation software like RealStrat and the likes. Running sample based guitar sounds, like the ones in Kontakt or other similar, through an amp sim can give surprisingly good results in some musical styles.
SONAR PE 8.5.3, Asus P5B, 2,4 Ghz Dual Core, 4 Gb RAM, GF 7300, EMU 1820, Bluetube Pre - Kontakt4, Ozone, Addictive Drums, PSP Mixpack2, Melda Creative Pack, Melodyne Plugin etc. The benefit of being a middle aged amateur is the low number of years of frustration ahead of you.

Sharpdion, the OP is not looking for suggestions for an amp sim, he's looking for synthesizers with convincing guitar sounds. To the OP: Synthesizers that "synthetically create" the sounds (like TTS-1) can seldom give convincing results. You should look in the direction of sample based sounds.

There's a guitar expansion pack available for Cakewalk Sound Center currently on sale, check out: http://www.store.cakewalk.com/b2cus/ProductInfo.aspx?productid=10-DSGT1.00-20E I thought i had seen a similar expansion pack available for Dimension Le/Pro too. Personally, I've been using Kontakt with some guitar sample sets such as the Quantum Leap package...this is an ok way to go in terms of achieving believable guitar sounds, distorted or otherwise. FYI Kontakt comes w/ a couple factory multisampled guitar instruments. There is currently a native instruments crossgrade/upgrade sale, with Kontakt selling for around $130. FYI i mostly do blippy-bleepy synth music, but i do like using the occasional power chord or screechy guitar solo. Lately, I've been considering checking out one of the dedicated electric guitar VSTi's, such as AAS Strum Electric, or Sugar Bytes Guitarist -- these kinds of products have playing features that could create very realistic playing styles.
