I went to a used CD store yesterday

Believe it or not... in some parts of the country they are getting hard to find.

It was cool and they had lots of vinyl... which I thought was really strange... in a fascinating way. I overheard avid collectors wistfully speak of the special edition that they either bought or missed out on. It seemed cool... like a abstracted layer of consumerism above and beyond the content of the medium. I guess deep down inside I envied the fun they seemed to be enjoying as they talked about collecting.

Anyways, I found the used CD bins in the back and scored some new juice.

I went in looking for some Traveling Wilburys but didn't find any. Tried Jonathan Richmond... no go.

Then I grabbed up Otis Redding sings 5 songs KMart special edition for $3. Maybe... that guy could sing.

Right next to it was Leann Rhymes... one of the great early ones produced by her dad. $4. Maybe... Go Go ate my favorite Lean Rimes CD just lath month.

The Riteous Brothers greatest hits $6. Maybe. I knew I'd love it... but could I handle it? What would happen to me if I actually listened to the whole thing? What would happen if I let it repeat... as is my habit... what?

Harry Nilsson's best was sitting right out in the front of the S stacks. $5. I just got 2 Nilsson albums last month so probably not today. It seemed like an omen and I silently hoped some young collector would take it home to make the same discoveries I only recently enjoyed having.

Then I hit it really big.... and I don't mean collection value wise... when I found the Blood Sweat and Tears greatest hits double CD for $9. I knew I had a new friend for the drive home.

It's gonna be epic!!!

anyways.... that never happens to me at the iTunes Store...  just saying.

I have a somewhat ridiculous collection of vinyl and Cd's here...3,500+ vinyl and a few hundred...more like close to a thousand CD's....I'm kinda nutso that way....

The space you have will always be exceeded in direct proportion to the amount of stuff you have...Thornton's Postulate.

I still prefer searching and "discovering" CDs, too.

With today's interest rates it's probably better to invest in CD's rather than CD's.

I invested in an IRA once.  He took my money and my girlfriend.

Don't overlook Amazon as a great source of used CDs. That avenue has the added benefit of being able to preview songs and suggest similar titles, which has helped my find some gems that I had previously never heard.

Good finds aren't limited to just oldies. The brief shelf life of popular music is a benefit in the used-CD market. I have found deeply discounted titles that had been hot-selling items just a couple years prior. More often, I have found some great titles that never were commercially successful and have never known a life beyond the cutout bin.

Another benefit to used CDs is the low price can justify buying titles specifically as mixing and mastering references, even if the music doesn't happen to be your personal cup 'o tea.

There is only one downside to used CDs that bothers me a little, and that is that the artists don't get squat from those secondary sales. I feel sad about that, especially for the struggling indie acts whose products didn't make a commercial splash initially but slowly built up a following over the years - in the bargain-bin market where they don't make a dime.

Good points, Bit.  I have bought stuff from Amazon and CD Baby.  Mostly new CDs, but a few have been "pre-owned."  But there's something about going through the bins and finding something I wasn't expecting/looking for.  You can find things on line, but I don't get the same satisfaction when I do that.  Also, you can see if the pre-owned disc is in good condition.  You have to trust the seller when you buy used on line.

On-line is definitely the way to go when searching for something specific.

Following on from Bitflipper's "downside" comments - the thing I dislike about used CD stores are that they are often full of stolen cd's from house burglaries and such . It is fun to have a root through them, but I always wonder where exactly they came from.

I just heard on a show last night that "Vinyl's making a comeback."  Yeah, right.  However, they went on to say that 10 million albums were sold in 2010 - more than in any year since the 90's.  I can't help but wonder why...

The "why" probably has something to do with those in the audiophile world.  There is a somewhat significant group of audiophile listeners that will argue that the overall fidelity depth of vinyl is superior to that of a standard CD (on top notch equipment they can make a case-a couple of times I got to hear top notch).  It takes the added bit depth of the (failed) SACD format for digital to come close.  The drawbacks to records are well known: surface noise, and long-term wear.  I can remember the days of people wrecking a record by having a damaged stylus in the tone arm.

For most listeners (myself included) the point is moot, as one would never spend the needed $$$ to have that level of equipment.

Back when I was a DJ ('80 to '84) I remember taking each "licorice pizza" and holding it so I could look across the surface.  If it was dark black and shiny it was kept, if dull and gray it was thrown out (meaning the grooves had been flattened due to excessive use).

And none of them understand how digital audio actually works (or analog audio for that matter). Their "knowledge" of why vinyl is superior tends to be based on phony mythology about problems with digital that simply don't exist, generally accompanied by overstatement of the problems that do exist, and willful ignorance of the very real problems with vinyl.

Having said that, vinyl doesn't necessarily sound bad under the proper conditions. And if someone subjectively prefers its imperfections over CD audio's, that's perfectly OK with me - as long as they don't try to explain why.

In order, then, to discover the limit of deepest tones, it is necessary not only to produce very violent agitations in the air but to give these the form of simple pendular vibrations. - Hermann von Helmholtz, predicting the role of the electric bassist in 1877.

So can't they just add a digital plug-in that takes CD digital and delivers  that vintage vinyl quality????? Perhaps a Bapu Droid?
