Guitar Rig setups?

Any tips or tricks to share?

I have struggled with way to much high end. Recently (ie last night and this morning) I have been playing with EQs and IRs and I found a setup to work well for me.

I use two shelving EQs (from within GR4 and in series) in front of the whole chain, dipping down from the highest frequency. This knocks down some of the shrill high end coming in through my interface.

Right now my favorite amp combo is the skreamer with a little gain and the Jump amp. The jump amp keeps the low strings tight and articulate but the skreamer warms it up some.

Then I have been playing with IRs (impulse responses) from the web using KeFIR as the filter (ie cab sim). There seem to be a lot of impulses out there! Now I am using the IRs with KeFIR and turning off the cabinet inside GR4.

Ironically the IRs were adding too much high end (for me) so I used Sonitus EQ to attenuate everything above 6k. Still there is content above 6k but now it is not so shrill.

It seems like a lot of work to get a good sound but it works for me :-)

I'm using the Reflektor module within Guitar Rig for IR's.  It only includes Reverb IR's, but I point my user path to a folder with RedWirez IR mixes and use them with the wet all the way up and dry turned down.  Much better than using the built-in cab sims.  I also use the graphic EQ with the range expanded and the top and bottom bands pulled down to get rid of booming bass and excess highs.

You are getting booming bass with the IRs?

I came across the IRs I found because they said the cab sims that came with GR4 had too much booming bass.

I will do a search for Redwirez and give them a try.

Not really so much... I just filter off the extreme lows around 40HZ out of habit more than anything else... it's probably inaudible for the most part.  Lowering the highs a bit is much more noticeable and gets rid of some of the harshness.

The RedWirez are a commercial set of IR's that give you a ridiculous number of mics and positions for each cabinet.  They aren't free, but they do give you a lot of options if you want that much flexibility.  Some people are a bit intimidated by the sheer number of IR's in each set, but to me the organization of the IR's (separated by mic type and position and sorted by distance from cab) helps me to dial it in just like moving a mic on a real cab.  I generally stick to the tried and true mics like the Royer R121 ribbon, SM57 and Sennheiser 421 and find the position I like then try different distances until I get what I like.

Are you using the Rammfire amp at all? What do you think of it?

Rammfire is my favorite for really heavy stuff.  I haven't played with some of the other tones I know it's capable of very much, but I'll check it out some more.

Haven't really been playing with the software amp sims much until recently when I sold my Axe-FX Ultra.  I had Guitar Rig as part of Komplete and I tried out the demo of Peavey ReValver and ended up ordering it this weekend.  It seems a bit less compressed and more natural sounding than Guitar Rig to me.  I'll have to spend some time with both to really make a good judgement on which I like better for specific sounds.
