Ed, The morning my stepdad died, I woke up feeling that something was amiss, but I couldn't put my finger on it, and lingered a bit before I went to work. My mom called, and told me what had happened. My sister, in Seattle, couldn't find her shoes that morning. He used to hide her shoes when she was little. Two days later, our immediate family were gathered in the dining room at our parents house. A fresh snow was falling, and the light from the room was bathing the front yard. A peregrine falcon settled on the split rail fence outside the window. He perched there for a while, looking in the window. As we returned his gaze, he cocked his head, and I think he winked, then flew off. He seemed content with what he saw. I have no doubt that falcon was my stepdad, bidding us his final farewell. Never saw that bird before or since. Yes, it's sad, and I feel your pain, but Jim is in a better place. And he's not really gone. But you may not recognize him. My best to you and yours, and especially your mom.

Thanks again everyone. The family is holding up well. Not that it's any consolation, but since we just went through this with our Mother last September, we're experienced hands at this point. Sadly it will be a bigger task to distribute the personal property this time around.
