I don't like the look of it.

At least with KVR they put original links to the developer, some of the plugins featured here expressly state that external sites are forbidden from distributing them.

It's a tough break for developers of these plugs if they don't at least get direct feedback from those using them, that's normally all they ask in return for supplying these things for free.

I have just sent a message to one of the developers (GSi) alerting him about this site.  I await his response.

Thanks for that heads up guys. I am always slightly leary of free stuff. I recently had a few plugs crash my X-1 projects.

The project ran fine until I loaded the plug and then it crashed. One one project in particular it wouldn't even reopen.

It can sometimes be difficult to determine what is in any link you click until it's too late and you have a trojan or a worm.

I know there are tons of legit plugs out there for free too. Guess I'm a little gun shy after having a few bad ones. In my case I don't think I got a virus, just some bad programming.

Pretty much the same for me. As a matter of fact, I try to stick to the bundled plug-ins and synths as much as I can these days - even for commercial plugs. Though there are some gems, there's also some very poorly written ones out there.

I rarely make exceptions, but certain freebies, like Brainworx' Cleansweap, are just too nice to discard - particularly when its coming from an established developer. :)

It seems that he is ok with it.  The reply was as follows:
    Hi Kev,
thank you for pointing me to this link.
That site appears to be a collection of links to freeware VST plugins,
nothing illegal or abused, they don't seem to charage money on the
plugins they show in the list.
    Thanks,
    Guido.

Well, I grabbed pretty much all the compressors and EQ's and few other various VST's last night. Got most of them loaded and running fine with 6PE. Haven't got too in depth with any of them but a few seems pretty decent. Density is sounding good  on a drum track I'm building. No virus for me.

    Different strokes for different folks.

Here's a portion of the EULA for that Density plugin from the devs site.
You are not allowed to make any copies or redistribute this software including but not limited to making the software available for download or making this software part of a software CD compilation.

Copyright theft is still piracy, not only that Bootsy's site has a wealth of useful stuff aside from his amazing VST's you'd be missing out on (not to mention the latest versions) by not visiting directly.

    http://varietyofsound.wordpress.com/downloads/

I would have thought it was common courtesy really, but I'm kind of old-fashioned that way.

Here's a freebie called LoudMax that I've used to good effect on the drum bus. It's a very simple "louder-izer" plugin: two sliders, one for threshold, one for output.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

I tried the SSL LMC-1 and thought it sounded horrible. Stale and dry as a popcorn fart. I also uninstalled and deleted the files I DL'd from the OP's link. Didn't read the whole thread at the outset, so as consequence didn't realize the site wasn't legit.

I did though re-DL Density mkII via the link Jonbouy provided. I thought that plug sounded really nice on drums. Much more musical than the LMC-1.

Edit: Forgive my ignorance but how do you know if a site is legit or not concerning DL of free plugins? Most people are gonna see "free" and assume all is fine. Obviously there's a tip off though for some of you. What do you look for? The last thing I want to do is DL something, free or not, froma site I'm not suppose to.

Density is a stellar bus comp.  I'll often use it in certain circumstances in preference to my UAD Precision Bus Comp.

I normally just visit the sites via the weekly KVR newsletter which seems to keep up with what's new free or paid, worth signing up for if you don't already get it.

FWIW, I'm sure DJSur posted that link with good intentions and the guy running the site is probably doing nothing more sinister than trying to get a few hits on his site, but I do like being able to give feedback and encouragement to the good developers if only for the selfish reason of keeping the good stuff coming our way.

OK, Jon, thanks for that. I don't typically browse and DL a lot of plugins, preferring analog hardware, but I agree the Density plug is fantastic.  I would have no quams about paying for that one.

In regards to SSL LMC-1... I don't think you'd typically want to use that for compression. It's more of an effect, and one that you'd rarely use if ever... :)

I still think that the site owner ought to do the right thing and include links or acknowledgements to original sources.  That's my only cause for concern though.  Aside from that, it's a great one-stop-shop for freebies.
