No autosave version? Shame, shame.... Check your audio folder and see if the tracks are there. You may be able to recreate it.

Josh. If you have the earlier version of Sonar still loaded, try saving it as a .bun file in that and then opening it in X1. Then save it as a .cwp. It's a long shot but might work.

this doesn't instil confidence that this won't happen again. I m thinking of bailing out on sonar. i can't experience this again.

With the file open on in Sonar in your main menu bar go to Project - Audio files. If there are any associated files it should at least indicate where they are.

i do see the files, but this shouldn't have to happen. to recreate the project, i figure i first have to create new project, then import each audio file. then go in and try to line up each audio file where they once were - unless there is a better way that im not aware of, this method is insanely dumb.

Can't you re-install your previous version? It may be quicker than you think. Anyway, some of us have had our faith tested and have reverted back to earlier versions awaiting bug fixes etc etc. It might be worth the effort. It may be quicker than recreating the song?

thanks to all for your help. I managed to get it recreated but not without sacrificing tracks and or soft synths used in previous version that I couldn't restore. even now, in in bare minimum, recreated form, it still takes longer to load and save than typical projects. Something must be giving the software hell to load... strange and frankly, unacceptable. mind you, this is maybe 6 tracks with all plugs and soft synths removed.

It would be a real good idea to turn your autosave and versioning back on so you don't get yourself in the same jam again. There are just to many things from a static zap to driver/plug in/audio interface and maybe even Sonar itself that can cause a project to fail. Having multiple versions of the project can at least get you back to having maybe 15-30 minutes of edits lost, not the entire project. I believe that the default originally would be for Autosave to be turned on as well as versions so it takes a conscious choice to turn off your own protection. Saying it is unacceptable would be a reasonable assumption if there were no safeguards built into the system . However, deciding to bypass all the built in safeguards was a choice you made.

here is a trick that worked for me before. Find your vstplugins folders both in the program files\cakewalk and the program files (x86)\cakewalk. click and drag the vstplugins folders to a temporary location. Be careful not to put both in the same parent folder or they will merge and cause you other problems. After moving the vstplugins folders open the project normally. You will see several messages about missing vsts and that is ok. Save the file and close it. Then move each of the vstplugins folders back to their original location. Open the project normally again and see if it will load. If so make an extra copy. If not then you have not lost anything but time. Good luck.

I had the same issue of X1 not finding audio tracks in projects. I resolved it by pointing X1 to my older folder from 8.5 by doing the following steps; Click on “Edit” on the top tool bar, choose “Preferences” from the drop down menu, and under “File” chick on “Folder Locations” than change the location of the “Project Files” to where the previous version of SONAR stored them on the HD than click “Apply” and close the dialog box. After that, every time you load X1 it will always go to, find and open all your older projects exactly where you left off. Peace, Steev

+1 on NOT using AutoSAve... Use your own Number system.,Autosave can run you into problems better off saving with a consecutive numbers after you do an edit you like or before you insert something that might end in crash after loading it happens .. Your not Dumb, we all had projects go bad on us.. "even now, in in bare minimum, recreated form, it still takes longer to load and save than typical projects. Something must be giving the software hell to load" ARE you using groove clips , if so Groove clips sucks up alot of memory and crashes without being able save, with "out of memory issues".. bounce your groove clips down and your save will happen almost instant compare to having Groove clips in the project.. It has been documented and I was told its being looked at. Simple Test would be take a loop and groove clip it and copy it 10 times and drag it out 10 bars , do the same thing with the same clip but this time copy and paste it 10 bars , and you will see the time difference it takes to save.. Yes groove clips have more info attached to the file but its impossible for it to take as much memory as it dose.. I mention this because perhaps your issue is with groove clips..

Do we have to use auto save with SONAR X1? Only if you're not stupid. Cakewalk has given us a way to recover our projects in case of a driver, operating system or Sonar failure. If people choose not to use it or don't take the time to learn about it, that's their fault. Seriously, if I was a client at your studio and your computer crashed and you lost my tracks because you didn't take every precaution, I would take my business elsewhere and you might get a lawsuit.

From my personal perspective the only risk encountered when choosing not to use Auto Save is the possibility of being told you are stupid. I use ctrl - shift - S fairly often. I am motivated by fear. It would be a real bummer to be called stupid and then get sued on top of that. Yikes!!!

Yes, Doogie, I also use CTRL-S frequently, however, that strategy has 2 weak points: 1) With CTRL-S, you're saving over the only copy of the project you have. Auto-save creates a second or more versions. More chances to have a recoverable version. 2) Sometimes I get really into it and forget to press CTRL-S. A computer never forgets to make the save.

Doogie prescribes ctrl - shift -S. :-) Take one every time you make a few really important edits.
