X1 suddenly broken...
Hi, any help on this would be great... X1b has been working almost perfectly for me until today - any project I open, it freezes up before any audio can be played. The last thing that happens before the white 'not responding' screen is the progress bar reading 'reset button 100%'. Nothing has changed on my system - yesterday I did a full 8hr day on it, opened the same project up today, and nothing will play. I have recently changed audio interfaces (to an Aurora 16/LT-USB) but the new setup has been running solidly for 2 weeks so I doubt this is the problem. Also, all projects open and play fine in 8.5, so the problem is peculiar to X1. And it is not plugin related, as the same thing happens when I try opening in safe mode. My first question is, how do I uninstall the Quickfixes? I have build 255 installed but can't work out how to uninstall it! It's strange actually, because when I go to Control Panel-Programs and Features, I cannot see X1 listed, just 8.5... Swift help would be very much appreciated, as I have clients waiting for their mixes - very embarrassing! Specs are below: Sonar X1b PE, Quickfix build 255 Gigabyte EX58-DS4 Intel Core i7 920 4GB RAM x3 WD Caviar Black HDDs Windows 7 Pro, 32-bit Lynx Aurora 16/LT-USB Thanks in advance.

From the update quickfix page Backup & Recovery The QuickFix installer will automatically backup your existing SONAR installation, the default location will be 'C:\Program Files\Cakewalk\SONAR VERSION\Backup\DATE\Version_Build.Number' If for any reason you need to restore to X1b you can do so by replacing the files in your installation directory with the ones found in the Backup folder Hopefully this will get you on your way. Is it just this project or any project that is causing the problem?

Thanks, went back to 242 and still no joy. And yes, the problem happens on every project I try and open in X1, but runs fine with 8.5...

If you don't use 8.5 perhaps uninstall that too. Make a new reinstall and see if that help.. Best Regards Freddie

Dear James! Uninstall all X1 included products. If you don't use 8.5 perhaps uninstall that too. Make a new reinstall and see if that help.. Whoa, whoa, whoa, there, Nellie! Many things to try before getting that drastic. First and foremost, rename AUD.INI, and see if the new default one that SONAR builds solves the problem. If it does, compare files, and restore differences to the new file until you find the culprit.

Thanks Freddie, but I'd rather try other options first! New AUD.INI has not solved the problem. I have, however, noticed that Sonar keeps changing the sample rate unnecessarily. I have Windows audio set to 48k, same as my Sonar projects, but when I opened Sonar just then, it changed sample rates 4 times then froze.

Check what the current sample rate setting is on the Lynx. It may have been inadvertently set to other than what your current windows or sonar rate is and that could definitely cause the problems your are experiencing.

Yeah I've already checked the Lynx, all is fine. When Sonar is not open, it's at 48k as it should be, then when I open a project, Sonar switches it to and from 44.1k 4 times. As I said before, I think I can be quite certain that the problem lies within X1, as everything is fine in 8.5. And so strange that it just stopped working like that...

If the lynx hardware was swapping sample rates... it would happen with v8.5 too. Just tell your clients you are running SONAR X1. They will surely understand the benefits are worth the extra time it takes for you to get this sorted out. I am sincerely sorry to hear of your troubles. Good luck. best regards, mike P.S. can you go back to your previous hardware just to finish your project in X1? Unless you are doing some OTB mixing the benefits of the Auroora are minimal or nonexistent when mixing tracks ITB. Maybe save the Aurora issue for your next tracking session?

If the lynx hardware was swapping sample rates... it would happen with v8.5 too. But the Lynx wouldn't have to switch, because 8.5 does't try to change hardware clock rates to match the project the way X1 does. It sounds to me like the projects use (or X1 thinks they use) 44.1kHz audio files and either the Lynx or Windows is fighting to stay at 48kHz.

Have you tried setting the Lynx to 44.1 to see if it opens up then?

Thanks guys, I'm not in the studio today, so will tackle this tomorrow. You're a funny guy Mike! I know you're not a fan of X1, but it has honestly been very good to me thus far, that's why I've been using it for paid work. I can complete some of the projects due in 8.5, but unfortunately on one of them i used ProChannel and am a little scared of what might happen if I open that up in 8.5! And I've already sold my ex-hardware, so that's not a possibility. All external controllers disconnected, same story. I will try and start the Lynx off at 44.1 and see what happens. More on this tomorrow. In the meantime, feel free to keep the suggestions coming, as it's a little impractical calling tech support from Oz. Tried it before, stayed up until the wee hours of the morning, then got put on hold for 3hrs :-)

Some things to check... 1. Double check that your Lynx is the default playback device on your system. You should be able to right click on the sound icon in your W7 system tray and click on “Playback devices”. It might be that Windows audio needs to be disabled. Not sure what your preference is but it could be that Windows audio (as I think someone else suggested) is clashing with your Lynx card. 2. In Sonar Go to Preferences > Audio > Devices and makes sure your Lynx card is the only one selected. 3. In Preferences > Audio > Driver Settings check your Playback Timing Master and Recording Timing Master entries. They may have been changed. I assume the Lynx should be listed in both places. 4. In Preferences > Audio > Playback and recording double check your driver mode. This may also have been changed (from ASIO to MME for instance). 5. Worth a check as well…Is Sonar running as an administrator?

I would recommend not having Windows and your DAW use the same driver and hardware. Too many conflicts caused by limitations of Windows. No Windows sounds are 24 bit so there's a big conflict right there. It already sounds like you have issues between 44.1 and 48K sampling rate. At least until you get things sorted don't let Windows use your Lynx card. that s one reason that I've always let Windows use the onboard card. that way Wondows never tries to steal or get in conflict with my DAW.

Hi guys, thank you all for your help, problem solved. I can't tell you exactly what it was, but basically Sonar kept freaking out and changing audio preferences. This is in some way related to the method I use to master projects: I use an old version of Wavelab (5) because I only use it for PQ coding, so see little need in upgrading. I have this installed on my XP partition, and the project was of course at 44.1. No hassles whilst in Wavelab, but when I reboot in to W7 and open Sonar, things start getting crazy. The cause of the problem is definitely something to do with the XP/Wavelab reboot, because I had the issue fixed this morning, and after finishing mixes in Sonar, had another project to master, so rebooted into XP. Same thing happened when returning to X1 in W7. I'd be interested to know if anyone knew the exact cause of this? It's strange that the problem was limited to X1 - 8.5 worked fine, as did normal audio playback in iTunes. Even if the sample rate is changed several times, Sonar should not be freezing up. Interesting point, Mike - I have my Windows preferences set to 'No Sounds', so would your advice about soundcards still apply?

Are you doing a cold reboot when switching between XP and Windows 7? If not, what may be happening is that the Lynx isn't releasing the XP drivers when you go back into Win 7 and the the Win 7 drivers are conflicting with the ones loaded on the card. I really don't know if that is a possibility or not but may be worth a shot. The strange behaviour of the sample rate attempting to change may be what is triggering it in that it is trying to call the drivers that are loaded by XP with a function call that is available in WIn 7 but not XP. I think a cold boot should clear the cards memory.
