Can't create linked clips

Is anyone having this problem? I have just upgraded from Sonar 6 Producer to X1 Producer. I can open projects created in 6 that contain lnked clips and the links work fine. However I can't copy these clips as linked clips or make any new linked clips. All copied clips are unlinked. I have triple checked the options settings and I have searched the forum. I have installed the X1a and X1b patches but this has not made any difference. Linked clips are essential to the way that I build up projects. I will have to revert to 6 until there is a fix which is a shame because X1 is fabulous otherwise.

No matches for "linked clips" in the Help File? That's where one would supposedly search first. I'm sure it's there somewhere.

SONAR PE 8.5.3, Asus P5B, 2,4 Ghz Dual Core, 4 Gb RAM, GF 7300, EMU 1820, Bluetube Pre  -  Kontakt4, Ozone, Addictive Drums, PSP Mixpack2, Melda Creative Pack, Melodyne Plugin etc.

    Hi westberg,

To copy a linked clip, use the Paste special option (Edit - Paste Special or CTRL + ALT + V). Check the "Link to Original Clips" box. You can also set drag/drop copy paste gesture to always linked clip. In the Track view click on the Options tab - Drag and Drop Options. Check Copy entire clips as linked clips.

    Hope this helps!

    Thanks Dan,

I have been using Cakewalk as a serious music production tool through its various versions since 1997 and I know the basics very well. This is definitely an X1 issue.

Does this comment mean that in your version of X1 things don't go the way Dan describes? If so, you should say so.

Kalle you are right - I should have been more precise. Yes -  in my version of X1 things don't go the way Dan describes. They do go the way Dan describes in S6. I mostly prefer to use drag copy but I sometimes use paste special if I know exactly how many repeats are needed. I checked the help information to be sure that the options were correctly set for X1, I have experimented with several work arounds and I searched the forums before posting. I am a long term user and I would not post unless I was sure that there was an issue.

    Hi Westberg,

Thanks for providing more information. I'm not able to reproduce a problem with copy clips as linked clips in general so there is either a specific problem attributed to your setup, file or method.

Are you copying MIDI or audio clips or both and getting this behavior? Specific to a clip type - What type? Is the problem specific to a Track type (Audio, MIDI, Instrument)? Are you experiencing this with new projects or projects created in 6? For example, If you create a new project in X1 from scratch, record a short audio clip and CTRL+Drag the clip later in the time line to copy it as liked, are you getting a linked clip (the Track Inspector - Clip Properties will display Clip Link = 1)?

Try to narrow down the problem, maybe describe the methods you use and workarounds you've tried, and we can investigate for a fix.

    Thanks for your time!

    Hi Dan,

After much experimentation I have narrowed the problem down to midi clips with the drag and drop options set to Copy Entire Clips as Linked Clips and either Replace Old with New (the default setting) or Slide Over Old to Make Room. Using either of these options results in unlinked clips. Blend Old and New works OK. This is the same for regular midi clips and step sequencer clips. Audio clips (which I rarely use) copy as linked in all 3 modes. Paste special produces linked clips. I am using X1b (build 242) in Win7 32 on an Intel quadcore.

BTW I miss the orange quarter note (beat) grid lines in the piano roll view and the straight line tool in the velocity pane that S6 has. Are these settings somewhere?

    Thanks - WB.

    Hi Westberg,

Thanks for the information. I was able to repro the problem. I'll let our engineers know about it. It should be addressed in a future update.

Piano Roll View Grid lines are set in the PRV View menu. Tick Show Vertical Gridlines. To set Grid resolution choose View - Grid resolution in the PRV. They're gray by default. You can change the color to orange in the colors seciton of preferences (Edit - Preferences - Colors). Choose Piano Roll view and Grid rules. This setting requires a restart of sonar to take effect, btw.
