Question about Sonar 7 Studio Edition
Alright I have Sonar 7 Studio Edition and its been pretty good for me. However I just got a new laptop and transfering all my sonar stuff has been a problem. My original laptop was a 32-bit system, but my new one is a 64-bit system on windows 7. I tried to install the 64-bit version of sonar on my new laptop, but I lost some effects and plug-ins because they were only for the 32-bit version. So I uninstalled that and now am running the 32-bit version on my 64-bit system... so far no major problems but some of my old sonar projects won't open. It gives me the error "There was a problem sending the command to the program". Should I just upgrade my sonar to a version that is more compatible with 64-bit systems? Should I get sonar x1 studio or producer? Or is it possible to run 32-bit sonar 7 Studio Edition on my 64-bit windows 7? I'm not sure if my version of sonar was meant to work with windows 7.

you confused me at first because I thought you were talking about Sonar Home Studio 7 which does not have a 64bit version. so technically you're in the wrong forum. which 32bit plugins did you lose when installing the 64bit version? it was not necessary to uninstall the 64bit version before you installed the 32bit version. they can both be installed on the same computer and you can open and run either one on it. as far as the error message, that sounds like an error with possibly MS VC++ or something when you reinstalled maybe.

oh ok thanks I didn't think about having both versions on. I lost Boost 11 and some other effects that I had used in previous projects. So should I upgrade to a new version like Sonar x1 or just keep what I got and hope for the best?

there were some changes in the 64bit updates and bitbridge during sonar 8 or 8.5 IIRC, so you might benefit from upgrading to X1. but it's a VERY different beast than Sonar 7 is. the learning curve will take you a little while.

I have X1 producer. it depends on what you need and how you use it as to whether it would be worth it to you or not. I have upgraded usually every other release, although I've upgraded every release for the last 3. the pro channel plugin is very nice - it's a channel strip built into each track. I don't think it comes on the Essentials version, tho, but I believe it's on Studio and Producer. some of the softsynths that come with X1 are pretty cool. the soundcenter is actually a decent softsynth as well as the Studio Instruments. they're good for getting started with anything if you use softsynths. session drummer 3 isn't bad either (i think that's producer version only) the workflow is very different, but after figuring it out it's not bad.

ight thanks for the info. I reinstalled sonar as the 32-bit version, but I am unable to open previous cakewalk projects or use the plug-in boost 11. Every time I try to, sonar stops responding and I have to close it. I read somewhere that the boost 11 plug-in is only for the 32-bit version... Is the problem that i'm running the 32-bit on a 64-bit system?

no, it shouldn't be the problem and boost11 is not 32bit only (where ever you read that was wrong). I ran boost11 on winxp 32bit for a long time before moving over to 64bit win7. open the plugin manager look at the VST plugins. there should be a boost11 and a boost11_64 obviously the _64 is the 64bit one. if that one's there, disable it so that you're not choosing it. then try selecting the 32bit version of boost11 in your project and see if it's still crashing.
