Computer problem

I posted this over in the Computer forum, but seeing as this is where the really smart people hang out, and there really is no such thing as off topic here ...........

Well, I've never seen one like this before.  It's happened about 4 times in the past week under a variety of scenarios.  The pc just shuts down completely... no BSOD, no warning, nothing... it just totally powers down like someone pulled the plug.  I can restart it immediately, and it's just like nothing happened (no scandisk, no safe mode or message that Windows was improperly shut down).  Then it runs fine 'til the next shutdown.

Both the cpu and my dual monitors are plugged into a UPS, but I know that's not the problem because the monitors don't shut down.  I'm thinking it must be the power supply (Corsair 650W, approx. 2 1/2 years old), as I can't imagine what other component could cause an instant power off like that.  Any other ideas, anyone, or confirmation that the power supply is the likely culprit?

Thanks,

I'll go with the Power Supply. Sounds familiar to a PC I had some years back, and replaced the power supply. Hopefully you can find a place where its returnable should that not be the cause.

Another thing, my wife's older laptop did similar. At the time, all I had to do was clean out the fan on the bottom. It was filled/stuck from years of accumulated dust and such. Once I got that cleared out, the thing ran fine without the overheating shutdowns.

Broken pencils are pointless.

Yes, I agree. The power supply would receive all my attention based on your description. Some depart with a bang while others take a while to die. Call your local computer shop to confirm they have a power supply tester handy. I would also suggest you bring the whole box to test though, as removing the power supply will not reflect the same load conditions you put it through on a daily basis.

Could also be the CPU fan that's showing signs of fatigue. When a CPU overheats, it shuts down without any error messages, hopefully before any damage occurs... usually.

There could be other reasons why this is happening to your system, but I would bet on either one above, if I was a betting man.

Good luck!

Thanks guys, but it was Reece and Herb to the rescue over on the Computer forum.

Yup, JC, it LOOKS LIKE it was some dust stuck in the cpu cooler, as cpu and sytem temp dropped a good 10-15 degrees after I blew it out.  I'm hoping that's it... if not I guess it's the psu.

So Reece & Herb told you to never let Mooch use your computer again?
