Potential upgrade to X1 from Sonar 6: some questions

Hidy ya'll.

I've been a Cakewalk user for over 20 years, pretty much back to Win95 and even before. Upgraded faithfully up until Sonar 6, and then started concentrating on composing, mainly with Sibelius, and not so much on production. Certainly no recording.

Recently however, I've started doing some 8-12 track recording using the Zoom R16. Needed an inexpensive way to multi-track a small band, and then add some vocals/guitars, and the R16 certainly provides that. So I need to mix it down. I got the Cubase LE5 (comes with R16) working, and that's been okay for a couple projects. But I hear great things about X1, and would like to get back on more familiar ground, although I understand X1 is totally retooled, but in a good way :). So I'm considering ugrading my Sonar 6 Producer to X1 Studio or Producer.

My desktop where I'll mix is new (since January) HP, quad Phenom 2.8 GHz, 6GB, 2 TB disk. I added on a Nvidia GeForce video (to aid in video production), but the sound card is still the onboard RealTek. I suspect I'd want something a bit more powerful.

I don't intend to record directly into the desktop. I frontend everything with a Mackie Onyx 16 channel mixer, so I've got great preamps, and this will feed the R16 directly. I mainly need good recommendation on a sound card to match the X1. Also, outboard or internal, or does it matter? If outboard, USB vs Firewire?

Any suggestions are welcome. Don't want to spend a ton of money: perhaps you've heard: the economy is a bit sluggish :), so a range of possibilities would be nice.

Thanks.

Blix: I have the Onyx Firewire, and used it with a laptop to record a few gigs. Then, with some Sonar update or Windows update or a combination, I started getting dropots, and got out of the habit. That's another reason for the R16: portable, lightweight, I can record almost all I need (I sub the drums down at present, but will likely gang a couple of R16s together and get EVERYTHING), no dropouts, leave the computers at home.

I'm mainly interested in X1 as a production platform: mix down and master.

Why don't you consider something like the Tri-capture since you don't need a work horse audio interface.  Just want to get the data over to the desktop.  It is a USB audio interface that can take audio up to 96/24.

    Here is a link: http://www.rolandus.com/products/productdetails.php?ProductId=1156&ParentId=104

There is also a quad-capture and a octa-capture if you need more inputs.  I've heard good things from people on the forum about the quad and octa versions.

Relatively cheap at $120 or so.

    Hope this helps,
    Tom
