Adjusting Key+ for multiple tracks

Hi,

I've tried adjusting key+ for multiple midi tracks by selecting the tracks using the cntrl key  and doing the update for one of the tracks in the track inspector - however it only seems to come into effect for the track I did the change to (ie not for all the selected tracks).

This "cntrl"  technique (quick group) seems to work ok for other track properties (inputs/outputs/gain etc), but doesn't seem to work for the key+ property.

I tend to use key+ quite a bit to quickly try out different keys for a singer.
I guess I could transpose multiple tracks at once instead, but I would prefer to keep the actual notes in their original key.

Am I doing something wrong?

(In previous versions, ie pre X1, this could be done by selecting tracks/right click/track properties/key+)

Cheers,
Russell

No, unfortunately, there's no way to group the Key+ parameters.

So, as a general question to all:

If a particular feature existed in a previous version of Sonar but no longer exists in the current version, is it by definition a bug?
Or is it actually classified as a "new" feature request (for an old feature)?

I guess  it depends on whether the feature was a) deliberately left out, or b) left out by oversight (I don't know which one applies in my case, ie regarding key+ for mutiple tracks).

In other words, how should I log this with Cakewalk? Any opinions?

    Cheers,
    Russell

Not sure... it's not really a bug. But Cakewalk did change the way that parameter works, which is why it no longer adheres to the Quick Groups feature.

I would file it as a bug because it seems like the omission of it was a mistake.

I can't imagine a designer ever arguing that X1 is made *better* by the omission of certain key (no pun intended) features from Sonar 8.5 and earlier.

I am not sure that you could do that in 8.5 either.  If so, I can not find a method that works there either.  I only every used the Process - Transpose function.

Ah ha... yes, Lorne is right. The feature hasn't changed because you can't Quick Group those parameters in 8.5 either. So this was not available before. You'll have to submit it as a feature request, because it's definitely not a bug.

In Sonar 8.5 you can change multiple tracks' "Key+" value via this procedure:

    1) select multiple tracks
    2) Tracks / Property / Key+...

This accomplishes what the original poster was trying to do (change multiple tracks' key+ without transposing events), although it's not as convenient as changing the Key+ within the track itself.

Sonar X1 doesn't even have a "Key+" value within the track properties; you have to open the track inspector, which means you cannot see multiple tracks' "Key+" values at once.  This, to me, is a design flaw, and is what I regard as a "design bug".

(By the way, how do you change multiple tracks' properties in X1, and does the procedure work for "Key+"?)

    Hi Travis,

Yep, you're correct as well. I forgot about the Tracks menu. They've removed that completely in X1.

Instead, to change multiple track parameters in X1, you need to use the Quick Groups features, which is basically holding down the CTRL key while you change a parameter for selected tracks.

I tried that method with both quick groups and fixed groups and it does not appear to work with either(8.5).  Do you have to hold your tongue the right way to get it to work?  I have tried both the track header track properties as well as the tracks menu - Key+ from the main menu.  It only changes the highlighted track as far as I can get it to work.

I never use groups at all for this (8.5). Just select the tracks and then use the Tracks main menu option to change the parameter. You're right that it only works on the selected track(s), which is why groups, quick or otherwise, don't figure in.

I think this feature is there primarily for a quick method of producing scores for various instruments.  You would put in a +2 for trumpet, +14 for tenor sax, +9 for alto etc. as it automatically adjust the key signature as well as the note placements.  It would be useful to be be able to do multiple tracks where you have 1st, 2nd, 3rd Alto sax etc.

It's also useful if your MIDI controller has fewer than 88 keys, since it lets you transpose specific types of tracks (e.g., bass and drums) down an octave.

Yes - that's indeed exactly how I used to do it (pre-X1)!

I have always used the Process - Transpose function for that as it does both Audio as well as Midi in 1 go.

The problem with that it that it's destructive and you can't tell after the fact whether it's been transposed or by how much.  The key+ method is important to have.

And transposing can only happen post-performance.  Key+ lets you play a drum kit or bass part an octave lower (or higher).
