Looking for a vintage synth - a la Hawkwind.

Hi there,

I am thinking about putting together a Hawkwind tribute (I know - I have no clue why) and I am trying to pick one of the synths to create a long slow waveform that traverses across about 8 Octaves.  I would think Pentagon wold give me the sound, but i am clueless on how to sweep it over such a range, or to disassociate it from the keyboard input. - This is new territory for me, so although I am familiar with Sonar and X1 (and can get Pentagon running), I will not be upset if you talk to me like a 5 year old.

Cheers..Grif

If I am reading you correctly, I would think that you would want to choose your waveform, then add a modulator to that waveform set for sine wave and the rate and depthwould be set to your taste. The waveform is the initial sound of the oscillator. The modulator is the part of the signal that sweeps. Hope that helps. If you are trying to use Pentagon, I will try to set it up and let you know what particular steps to take. I'll watch this thread. Let me know if you figured it out.

I tend to agree. While something like Thor in Reason is more modular and has better options for syncing rates and depths with time signatures etc, Pent I can come real close. Here's a breakdown:

You have up to four oscilators available. Osc's can be synced in pairs (1 and 2, 3 and 4). Each osc has a LFO balance knob which dictates how LFO 1 and LFO 2 are applied. You can set it all the way to the left (LFO 1 only) or to the right (LFO 2 only).

You have several LFO's you can use. LFO 1, LFO 2 and a master (EG) section. LFO 1 and 2 can be run in series, parallel, and you can set them to affect left, channel, or both channels.

I hope this helps you understand how Pent I works. I've gotten LOTS of great vintage style sounds out of it.

P.S. You can also use it as a vocoder! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eWdYrxXo0xA

I'm not sure if I understand what you're trying to accomplish, but it sounds like you want to slowly slide the pitch from a low extreme to a high one or vice versa.  You might try doing this with portamento settings.  Most synths would not support a pitch bend beyond an octave or two.

Do you have Rapture?  Rapture's pitch envelope can achieve an 8-octave sweep.  I've just tested it out.

Pentagon, Rapture or Z3ta should be able to do it. However, in my inventory of synths, my first stop would be XILS 3 LE. If you want to do a lot of this sort of thing its worth checking out. http://www.xils-lab.com/pages/XILS-3-LE.html (It also makes a great effects processor in the audio chain)

I suspect a VCS 3 was behine the original Hawkwind sounds.

I have Rapture LE - and that sound like the way to go - thanks Kev - and to all the other responders - much appreciated.

I have never used the LE version so I don't know which features are present.  Is the pitch envelope included?
