Volume level is so low out of the VS 700R

Not sure what or where the culprit is, but here's my setup:

My main control surface is the VS 700C, connected to the CS 700R.  The main output (sends) are connected to a PreSonus Central Station, that shows levels which at times should be pretty loud!  I've got 3 sets of speakers connected to my Central Station:  JBL LSR 4300's, Yamaha HS80's, and the little Cakewalk midfield desktop speakers for good measure.

Now the speakers are powered.  But with them turned up pretty high (in the case of the JBL's, it's all the way up!), I'm not getting a lot of volume.  I mean it's loud enough to hear, but not can't be classified as "loud".

Does anyone know if there is a way to crank up the output/signal from the VS 700R?  Or maybe within Sonar X1b?

Any tips or advise would be very helpful and appreciated.  Thanks in advance!

UPDATE:  So I am not sure what to think now.

I loaded the Cakewalk_AudioDemo1.cwp file which I found in the tutorials folder of Cakewalk.  Man, the sound levels are massive, and everything is absolutely loud when I hit Play in my transport controls.

Is there a project setting I am missing, then?  Cuz when I open up my own project to start from scratch, my sound levels are not even close.  I'm not even talking about analog signals here, but just VSTi instruments and stuff.

    Am stumped..

You need to turn off the -20 pads in the preamp-input section. They are on by default. Make sure you turn your monitors down before doing so. You can also adjust the preamps if you want to leave the pads on. There is a huge difference with the pads off.

If you are using the VS-700R's Main Outs then the VS-700C's Monitor knob will be your first point of gain staging. I have a similar setup where I have my Main outs going to a Big Knob, so I leave my Main out knob on the VS-700C at around 4 o'clock. I also have the JBL's, and I leave their output at 100%. Then I use the Big Knob's volume control to adjust my playback level, never touching the settings of the VS-700C or the JBLs.

Alternatively, you could use any of the dedicated hardware outputs on the VS-700R, like 1 + 2, or 3 + 4, etc. This would bypass the monitor control on the VS-700C and then just run a straight line level output to your Central Station.

In case you did not know, you can turn the pads off (or change the trim) by going to Utilities / VS-700 in Sonar and then clicking on the Mic Pre tab.  Craig's advice is right on--just wanted to make sure you knew where to go.

One of my little complaints is that you can't save these settings with a project and everytime you power down the IO unit you lose this.

The default levels are way too low, but I guess that's better than the other way.

You're def right about the unit's setting resetting after power cycling. However, you can save presets, which is what I do. Every time I fire up the VS-700 I load up my preset and my mic pre level is ready to go.
