Lightning crashes!

The wife called me this afternoon and says "Where are you?". I told her I was out doing whatever the heck it is I do, and she said a nieghbor just called and that lightning had hit one of our big trees in the backyard, and there was windows broken and the fence was down and the fire dept was on the way and I should probably head home. Here are some shots I took after they left. We found shards of wood over 300 feet away from the tree. One about the size of a baseball bat took out a window of the lady next door house. No one was injured, which is unreal considering we live 100 yards from a park and elementary school that had just gotten out for the day.

The lady next door is kind of a shut in, and I guess the loud explosion and then her window breaking really scared the hell out of her. She must have thought the world was coming to an end. It took half the block to talk her into coming outside to see what happened.

It's a scary thing.  I used to have over a 1/3 of an acre with lots of trees including 140' tall Douglas Firs.  We had a lightning strike that blew the bark off one tree and toppled a 20' section between two other trees - a so-called "widow maker."  It took some interesting maneuvering for the tree guys to get it down without anyone getting hurt since it was stuck up in the air about 50' high.  The lightning burned a total of five trees that had to be removed...

Good one Reece! Actually, I spent Fathers Day, planting 28 varieties of plants and flowers. After today I'm down to 24. After the tree guy comes tomorrow, I may lose more. Meh...... I was going to wait until everything had taken root, and the mulch was in to post new photos.

As for a sign from God, I heard a voice once upon a time. In that moment, I was in a particularly nasty spot, and things couldn't have been much darker. Chaos swirled around me, and there seemed to be no hope and I didn't know who to turn to. It was then that I heard this voice that seemed so calm and comforting, and was speaking in a soothing whisper that sounded as though it was right next to my ear as the voice said, "You are on your own pal, good luck".

I'm glad no one was hurt. The pics are really revealing. That was a big strike!

We live in a kind of enclave of trees surrounded by farmland,so when the big storms roll through and the lightening strikes we are sitting ducks. When we moved into the house it had a large antennae mast concreted into a pad at the rear of the house about 30 ft high....I never had it removed even though we are connected to cable TV because it makes one heck of a nice lightening rod and has probably saved my chimneys more than once.

Unfortunately we need to remove it soon to excavate and that worries me.

The best part is, you've got some police tape you can salvage.  I'm sure that could come in handy in all sorts of ways in the future.

    Use it wisely...

Yes, my homeowners insurance will pick up some, but I opted for a large deductible so I'm eating a good portion of this. I figured knowing Beagle, even in a virtual kind of way would give me better protection against an act of God. Perhaps it's time to rethink my relationship with Reece. I just don't know whether to move closer in our relationship or farther away.

Just don't touch him if he's wearing his pink nylon nightshirt and fluffy mules the static charge will be worse than what happened in your back yard.
