Long time... question re: Far Field Monitors

Hey, All! Long time no chat. Left corporate America just over 2 years ago and haven't been on the computer much. :-)

So, I've moved into an amazing new studio space. My former studio was a home-base project studio where the control room was easily filled with sound from my JBL LSR6325p's and KRK ROKiT 5's (gads I dislike the ROKiT's). The new control room is nearly big enough to hold the entire footprint of my old studio... and I be needing somefink biggerer for the front of the room so producers and artists get that warm fuzzy feeling. I'm looking at some old school JBL 4412A's as a possibility, but the cold hard truth is this is one area I've never had to be concerned with before. I just don't know what the market is for an affordable, good sounding Far Field monitor.

Did a couple of searches here on the forum, and most threads that mention Far Field are discussing why you need a good NEAR field monitor. Nice! LOL

So, friendly folks of this fine forum: If you had under $1000 to spend on something you only need to get clients wiggly when their music is wound up WAY too loud, what would you buy?

Far-field monitors -- are usually not suitable at all for a home recording studio. These are larger and more expensive and demand an acoustically treated room to provide the proper reference sound.

Don't laugh but I use my Yamaha 112 PA speakers for this very purpose. They are amazingly flat and loud! It's the 2" driver for the horn that sets them apart from others. Sorry I don't have the exact model number but they look like these in the picture but I bought them 12 years ago. ( $400 )

+1 for some good pa speakers. 


If i had only 1000 to work with i would look at these.  I wouldn't mix on them but for loud playback they would work.  Upgrade with a sub for that extra wow factor.....  I have a live x rig we use for live shows which is loud and clear.

I can highly recommend those EV's... since I just bought a pair for my PA. :-)

I could move my PA into the front of the room, but... it's kinda  big. Maybe that'll be the stopgap measure for now. 8000 watts of power and a pair of 18" subs under those EV's sound amazing for PA work. Why not impress producers and artists with them?

So, in case anyone's playing the Home Game, we picked up a pair of Aero speakers (can't recall the exact model) and a Klipsch subwoofer. Total investment, including a Samson Servo 260 amplifier: $85.00

Sounds fricking huge... not, well, CLEAN, but fun and silly as all get out! LOL

Probably a temporary fix just to have some loud fun stuff going on. Can't find anything on the net about these particular Aero speakers. They're a 4-way 220 watt cabinet. Huge. Teak finish, so they look beautiful. I certainly won't be mixing anything on them, but they are LOUD. Everyone who hears them giggles and smiles at them. Crazy.

Are we done? Nah. Eventually we'll get something real in there, but first I'll be upgrading the mixing console and building a new studio PC. No worries.
