Could someone help me with some basic instructions please...

Hello,  I'm new to this forum and very new to x1, but not new to recording on computers as I've used Cakewalk Music Creator 3,4,5.  The options on x1 are a little much for me to take in.  I have no doubt that I'll get it all figured out.  Anyway to my example and question.  Just for learning, I've laid down just a basic drum line from the Soft Synths SI-Drum kit.  Went to do a little jamming on another track with my guitar.  Set up my input routed it to a bus, but every time I hit the record button the Drums show up on my fresh track.  The volume is way high, and the tempo is faster than the original midi track.  Any ideas?  Am I just missing something?

Not sure about the Drum issue but the midi is probably just following your project tempo. Try adjusting the tempo in the control bar.

I don't know the answer to your question but someone will help you soon I am sure, this is a god forum because of the people and because of Cakewalk being such an awesome platform... and X1 is the bomb.
I'd highly recommend that you buy Scott's book, X1 POWER (Amazon: free and fast shipping), watch the Cakewalk videos either here at Cakewalk University or on YT... and the Groove3 videos are worth every cent. Then of course, there is the manual. I used Cailbre e-book converter and changed it from PDF to .mobi and put it on my Kindle.

A bit more info on your set up will be needed to really help.

My best guess is that you are recording the audio output from whatever is playing your MIDI drums back. I'm also going to take a bit of a guess and say that the timing difference you are hearing is the effect of latency but could be MIDI clock related depending on where the MIDI timing is coming from. Any external synths/drum machines attached?

That is all best guess. More info on type of soundcard / interface, sample rate, etc. and the way it is set up will definitely help with the diagnosis.

Freeze the drum tracks (turns them inot audio only), archive the midi track so it is out of the way, and record you guitar on a different track.  Dealing w/ all audio (or midi) will make it easier to track down the problem.  There are some good ideas above, but simplify the problem as much as possible to work out the kinks.

DAW do get more complex and it is confusing, but keep after it.  Same principals as the basic daws, just more you can do - and do wrong.
